(Description by J. Campbell)
Ignivomous was among the first of many recent bands to breathe cold morbid breath into the decrepit form of dark and brooding Death Metal. Reinvigorating the style of metal perfected over a decade earlier by the likes of Incantation and Immolation is a task the band has not taken lightly. Rote mimicry was never the path chosen by Ignivomous on their previous releases and with their second album, “Contragenesis,” the band pushes even further and still manages to expand the boundaries of their sound. What separates Ignivomous from their peers is the intuitive nature of the songwriting. As with so many classic albums, intuition is the driving force behind “Contragenesis.” The band demonstrates that it can unfold the pieces of each song in such a way that the listener is drawn completely into the work. Every turn and transition is carefully sculpted so that the detail is preserved while still moving the entirety of the composition forward toward its zenith. This attention to detail forces the listener to notice the micro-elements and simultaneously behold the overarching structure. Ignivomous prove that they have mastered the ability of imbuing this highly technical Death Metal with a certain elasticity that renders the songs listenable and engaging. The ferocity of the songs is never degraded and the parts are flexible enough to prevent the sterility that is all too common in technical music. The interplay between the two guitars is largely responsible for this effect as is the organic and unaffected production of the album. Radical tempo shifts and unpredictable melodies also enhance the mystique of Ignivomous’ music. While some bands look to include new instruments or samples or some other novel gimmick to alter their sound, Ignivomous never change the ingredients of their work. Relying upon only the most fundamental and traditional elements of Death Metal, Ignivomous are masters of incorporating subtle, intuitive alterations within the formula that constantly reinvent the work. By the end of “Contragenesis” the image that Ignivomous create is one of pure apocalyptic nihilism. A burned out world consumed by the void of its own collapsed spiritual infrastructure. The closing track in particular, entitled “The Last Cadence to Bloodshed,” leaves the listener alone and spiritless in an empty world. To augment the expression of desolation within the music, Ignivomous called upon the inimitable TK to conjure similarly abject visual imagery for the album. The combined result is a Death Metal masterpiece, the power of which will be felt for years to come.

Knelt Rote “Insignificance” CD
ANTI-GOTH 217

(Description by J. Campbell)
The music of Knelt Rote defies easy classification. The band is clearly heavily influenced by the darker elements of Death and Black Metal, the more vicious strains of Grindcore and Punk, and the brutal nihilism of Harsh Noise and Industrial Music. Consequently, the three tracks on the band’s second album, “Insignificance,” bare the markings of each of these sub-genres of extreme music. While the merging of disparate sounds is often a dodgy venture, unlike most bands that try and fail in this endeavor, Knelt Rote do not attempt to sew together a patchwork of ideas. Rather, the band’s union of styles comes across more as superimposition with the resultant image being one that displays the commonalities of each of those various facets of expression. In this way, Knelt Rote defy the homogeneity that infects a great deal of the music being made in each of the aforementioned categories of music. The band nonetheless maintains a sense of purpose that unifies their work. When listening to “Insignificance” one never gets the sense that the band is trying too hard to push boundaries. Instead, the sounds presented on the album feel like the natural emanations of the minds involved in its creation with myriad ideas interwoven like tentacles attached to the same massive beast. Although the highly regarded Parasitic Records released an excellent vinyl edition of this recording a couple of years ago, NWN! has chosen to present this album on CD so that it can be widely proliferated and get the attention it rightfully deserves. Knelt Rote is currently preparing a third album for release on NWN! Productions.

For over a decade, Revenge has persisted in cultivating what is arguably one of the most confrontational sounds in the metal underground. Immediate, controlled and utterly violent, their work stands alone in the depth of its hostility and refusal to follow trends. On their earliest releases, Revenge established a particular sound and general approach to their music that released itself as a cacophonous flood of manic aggression. Their music has continued to evolve through the years, however, and the release of 2008’s “Infiltration.Downfall.Death” saw the band expand its approach to utilize a wider variety of song structures and recording techniques to strengthen its musical assault. Their new album, “Scum.Collapse.Eradication” continues in this vein, with further development in the way the songs are presented augmenting the extremity of the violent chaotic architecture that Revenge created with their previous output. While Revenge still predominantly relies upon the relentless blasting fury for which they have always been revered, this album, like the last, is punctuated by moments of mid paced sections hammering down into doom ridden bulldozer riffs showing the band striking a perfect balance between genocidal annihilation and individualized slow painful crushing destruction. Additionally, the raw and chaotic production that Revenge utilized on much of their earlier work has been wisely expanded upon just enough to reveal the full spectrum of the instrumentation. While maintaining a very strict dedication to the original sound, aesthetic and structure that has been the foundation of the band since the very beginning. These strategic adaptations have made the songs even more potent and to the point. The elite, strengthen themselves, and leave the weak behind, and this is precisely the approach that Revenge has taken with this new release. As usual, Revenge’s sound is caustic with the obsessive fury of J. Read’s insane percussive assault and rabid, spiteful vocals. While long time session member Vermin offers a thick and grinding guitar and bass attack beyond anything heard on the bands previous albums. Consumed with contempt, Revenge continue to press forward walking alone above the weak scum with absolute disregard for all who question their approach. This militant doctrine defines all of Revenge’s work, but it is most prominent on this, their fourth album. All unnecessary elements have been stripped and discarded leaving only the most effective weapons in the Revenge arsenal with which to continue down the supremacist path of undying intolerance for the swine known as mankind.

“ The scam has come undone. Move on it or step aside. Take your place at the back of the line. When it’s time to move equalization begins. Behold forced correction.”

ANTI-GOTH 219

Few debut albums conjure the sort of rabid anticipation that has developed around Martire’s “Brutal Legions of the Apocalypse.” Until now, this album seemed to be one of those legendary recordings that would remain forever buried. Although recorded years ago, this album sounds every bit as unique as fans of Martire would expect. Indeed, listening to this record now it sounds as if, by delaying this release for so many years, Martire were simply giving the rest of the scene a chance to catch up. And, yet, “Brutal Legions of the Apocalypse” demonstrates that Martire are still far ahead of their peers. This is a disorienting album in the best way possible. Martire routinely employ unconventional time signatures and constantly engage in dizzying start/stop exercises. For many, primitive bestiality and technical virtuosity represent the opposite ends of a spectrum. Martire, however, reconcile these two extremes to tremendous effect. Martire’s exhibition of technical prowess should not surprise anyone who is familiar with the other bands with which the members of Martire are involved. (These include Tzun Tzu, Cauldron Black Ram, StarGazer, and Mournful Congregation to name but a few.) Martire adeptly apply this technical skill in the service of soul crushing savagery. The bestial veneer that adorns much of Australia’s output is thickly applied to this recording without obscuring any of the music’s complexity. Conversely, unlike so many “technical” bands, the fervor of Martire’s attack is never diluted by pointless showmanship. The elements of Martire’s sound work in tandem. The production may be the key to Martire’s music and to the degree that the delay in the release of this record was due to the band’s efforts to ensure perfect production, it seems that their efforts have paid off. All of the instruments are sufficiently separated in the mix so that nothing is obscured. The guitars are wisely left just below the surface of the percussive rumble of the drums and the vocals are loud enough to augment the ferocity of the music. Considering the strength of Martire’s catalog, it must have been daunting for the band to take up the task of recording a full-length album that could live up to the promise of their earlier releases, but “Brutal Legions of the Apocalypse” meets and surpasses any and all expectations that one could have developed in the many years since Martire’s last emanation.

A large and sprawling metropolis, Belo Horizonte, more than any other city, gave birth to the Brazilian Black/Death cult that emerged in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Impurity, while not as well known as some of the other, more popular hordes from that time, were instrumental in developing the identity of that scene, and Impurity, more than any other band, laid claim to Cemiterio do Bonfim. That cemetery, as old as the city itself, inspired and catalyzed the creation of Impurity’s masterpiece, “The Lamb’s Fury” in 1993. Impurity’s rituals of Blasphemic desecration are now legendary and the band has earned its status in the canon of Brazilian Black/Death. Impurity’s style and delivery has changed and evolved substantially through the years, but unlike so many of the original Belo Horizonte bands, Impurity has never wavered in their sense of extremity, and today Impurity continue to channel the macabre darkness of Bonfim. The first side of this LP consists of a 2008 re-recording of the band’s 1989 demo entitled “The Impurity Temple.” While re-recordings of older releases are often dubious endeavors, Impurity managed to maintain the integrity of the original songs. The execution and production are, in a technical sense, superior to the original, but Impurity’s fidelity to the spirit of their early recordings is what makes this re-recording so vital. The second side of this LP contains new tracks recently recorded. These songs are every bit as primitive and draped in evil as Impurity’s earlier material although the band plays with a greater sense of control and purpose on these new recordings. Impurity continues to prove that they are among the very few bands (especially among their Brazilian peers) that have been able to maintain such a high level of quality over so long a period of time.
