Thread made me dig this out again. Time has been good to it, even the production choices show how ahead of the curve they were.

They keep uploading stuff from the AJFA box.

The drum sound was always annoying on this album for me, tin sounding type writer.

Hands down the most essential metal release of the year.

I really wish they'd release the dvds separately or in a cd box set.

The first riff from Mournful Congregation's Tears From a Grieving Heart reminds me of To Live Is To Die (about 6 minutes in).

This is correct. It was an invention of Lars, who placed coins on the kicks, to make a strong "click" sound.

Wasn't Vinnie Paul the one who came up with the silver coin on the drum patch? That's what I heard back in the CFH days.

Anyway, voted Blackened. That song alone is better than any track on MOP.

Juatice came out 2 years before CFH.

Yeah, but the Abbott brothers and Metallica always had a complex relationship.

Darrell always had a lot of respect for Metallica. Pantera were doing Metallica covers all the way back in '84. Hetfield would come into town to take lessons from Darrell. There's an infamous jam session from '85 where those who were there swear that the main opening riff for Master of Puppets was played by Darrell, and later co-opted by Hetfield. I know that post MoP, Hetfield took lessons from Darrell. After AJFA came out, Darrell claimed that Metallica owed him royalties from AJFA because Hetfield had converted so much of his teaching curriculum and riffs into album. Said that 80% of the title track alone was barely changed riffs that Darrell had shown him that were actually timing exercises.

I had quit taking lessons from Darrell a couple years before because my parents moved to a different part of the state, but I know people who continued to take lessons, and they state that Darrell was correct in his accusations to this day. With Hetfield spending so much time with them, I don't doubt that he picked up other techniques from the Pantera camp. There was a lot of competition back in the day with bands going so far as to video tape guitarists when they came through town, and people fighting over the tapes when they found out about it.

All interesting stuff! Now where the heck are those VHS tapes?? Locked in Vinnie's vault?

So, Metallica stole from Dimebag, Mustaine, Excel and many others, went to shit after KEA or after first two/three/four albums, but they still somehow managed to become the greatest metal band of all time, bigger than the genre itself and one of the biggest music acts ever, whereas no other metal band is even close to such an achievement?

Apparently Lars is smarter than I thought.

No one owns the chords and scales on a guitar, so all we have to judge is the outcome. Dimebag wrote Power Metal and James wrote ...And Justice for All. Enough said.

Not saying that a lot of that shit isn't an exaggeration or downright bullshit but everybody knows bigger =/= best. It doesn't necessarily means the opposite either, of course. It doesn't matter how bigger than Judas Priest or Black Sabbath (to name two rather uncontroversial cases) Metallica is they will never be better than them. Catching lucky breaks and taking smart business decisions doesn't have anything to do with their musical qualities. Of course, if they were awful they probably wouldn't have succeeded, but that doesn't mean they're great either. If popularity meant quality, then Kanye West would be right about thinking he's the biggest musical genius of our era, way better than Metallica.

And of course Lars is smart, he certainly didn't make Metallica what it is through his musical talents, which are rather limited. He's a piece of shit and a mediocre drummer, but he was probably the smartest guy in that whole scene (if not the only smart guy), and he's the main reason why Metallica is what it is nowadays.

Every huge band catched lucky breaks and smart business decisions. Thats crucial to become popular. Otherwise you‘re in the same boat as Cirith Ungol or Angel Witch, for example.

Yeah, that's my point. That's what makes them big, but doesn't have anything to do with them being better (or not).

They're bigger and better than Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

This is idiocy.
Maybe bigger, but no way are they better than Sabbath.
