Spend $3800 on my stereo in 1988 - still have it. Technics SL1210, Sony amp 530ES, Technics cassette deck, Mission speakers ...

These 2 first answers are interesing IMO. Both of you are using high quality material. I wasn't sure metalheads would us this kind of stuff.
As far as I'm concerned I use Yamaha cd player/amplifier/deck + JBSystems turntable + Sony speakers. _________________

- Sony PS-J20
- Sony CMT-DX2D CD/MC combo
And that's it. I've been satisfied with this equipment so far, great sound and the prices were reasonable. _________________ Iron striking metal

Got a couple of set ups:
Amps:
Sansui 210: a brilliant old analogue model.
NAD basic model.
Music Fidelity XL phono pre amp: the NAD has no phono output so I use this with it, phenomenal sound.
Turntables:
PROJECT DEBUT SE II: affordable and very high quality, sharp sound.
DUAL 505-2 BELT DRIVE: got given(!) this by my landlord, MP3s are better apparently Anyway, high quality sound with an automatic shut off mechanism.
Cassette player:
KENWOOD KXF-W1030: perfect for doing dubs. No buzz, or back ground noise.
CD Player:
A basic Philips model, does the job. |

I have vintage Project/One turntable going into shit Sharp bookshelf stereo. (Office)
Also Onkyo 5.1 receiver + Onkyo speakers. CD/DVD player only. (Living room)
In car BMW stock head/6 disc changer.
Onkyo is only nice/decent piece I have. I listen to LPs while working (office) but need 5.1 with TV for movies (living room). So I need a good 2 channel amp for the office. And probably need to upgrade turntable at that time too. |

All I know is speakers I get never last since I end up putting the volume to loud, with loads of bass and the speakers die... _________________

You should respect the 1/2 rule:
If ampifier is 60 watts then you'e to buy 120 watts speakers and you shouldn't have any problem.
At least that's what one explained to me when I bought my stuff. _________________

I use a sound-dampening set of headphones at work with my PC, and a 160 gig iPod with mid-quality Sony earbuds at home. I don't really have a stereo any more, everything is through headphones. |

The amplier is yamaha AX-497 it has 2x120 W DIN. Direct Amp. I also have those speakers. Theyre good for 300 wat short term and 150 constant.
I have a Numark USB turntable
and this sacd/cd player from sony:
Im pretty satisfyed with the system.

You might want to reconsider the position of that turntable if you give a shit about your records. |
