I need help with this sentence:
Illud malum quod homines faciunt
Could the word "Illud" be excluded here? If not, is "Illum" more fitting, or is it no difference?

you can strike the word out if there isn't a significant point in a previous sentence. "Illum" would be an accusative, that should be wrong in that context.
Hope, I'm right. It would be better if another user could confirm that. |

Was about to say the same. The demonstrative pronoun "illud" refers to some maybe earlier mentioned evil and points it out. If you use the sentence in this context you can't skip it. But if you want to express the men driven evil as a generality then just stay with "malum" at the beginning.
*Well, my Latin has got a lil' bit rusty and so I hope I don't tell ya some shmoof.*

"Illud" is accusative as well, neutral case, which is "malum". A rough tranlation would be: That which (Illud Quod) men do (homines faciunt) is evil (malum).
Verb is omitted as it often happens in classical latin.

hm. For a foreigner it's more than ok. If you need a 110% correct answer you'll have to wait until I get my hands on my latin dictionary which is still @ my parents' place. I have a doubt that maybe you should use the verb commit instead of do.

My latin is "a tad rusty", and everytime I contact anyone about this sentence, it's always "it's correct, but...".
Seems like a difficult sentence to translate. It was easy to find a direct translation, but the grammar is hell.

So you'd rather say MALVM QVOD HOMINES COMMITTVNT?
It somehow leads away from 13's question -SORRY- but may I ask why? I know it's deadly to draw conclusions from the own language to others, but in German evil is done and crimes are committed why I'd also tend to "facere".
