I like their stuff up to Cowboys From Hell. Sometimes I listen to the odd track for some nostalgia, but even then I did that for the first time in 4 years a couple of weeks back.
The tough guy act they and their fans seem to put on amuses/aggravates me in equal measure.
But if anyone here likes them, then live and let live. |

Pretty much. The only phase in Pantera's history I like is the Trendkill heroin self hate era, but even that was poor-mans eyehategod. _________________ "14 words: we must secure the depravation of the children and ruin the whole fucking world..." |

I'm certainly no uber kvlt goat worshipper, but aren't this band just weak as piss with cliched dumb ass riffing for teenage kids? Fuck, I'm pleased I had Death, Septic Death and Godflesh to listen to in my adolescence. _________________

After an adolescence listening to 80s metal & punk, when I heard Panterrible they just sounded like Skid Row crossed with Helmet.
"This is supposed to be heavy?"
I do think it hilarious how morns that try to white knight this shit band try to play the "you're just trying to appear underground!" card. _________________

I listened to Pantera when I was a kid. And a whole lot of other bands that would be considered 'shameful' by today's underground standards.
Nowadays it takes a twelve year old one day to go from Linkin park (or whatever is popular alternative music at the moment) to the most underground and bestial extreme metal, simply because it's only one mouseclick away. But for me, and I think for everybody who discovered metal in the 80's and 90's, it was a gradual discovery that took it's time and that started with the more commercially succesful bands like Pantera amongst others.
It's nice that you listened to Death & Septic death at an early age, but I can't imagine those were the first bands you listened to? And if they were, I'm sure you were more exception than the rule.
I'm not trying to defend Pantera, it's atleast 5 years ago since I last played them, but each band has it's purpose and merit. And I'm sure Pantera helped introduce a considerable amount of people to more underground music. |

No they weren't the first bands I listened to. I grew up listening to Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Dio, Accept, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, etc (although my first love was Adam and the Ants...). The point is that, irrespective of the fact I was lucky enough to be growing up in the 80s and have a slew of great, original and exciting music to listen to, I would have more than likely had the taste to view Pantera as weak shit. Fuck, I stopped giving a fuck about Maiden circa 'Somewhere in Time' as I thought they'd pussied out at a time that Thrash was making its mark on me. That I was eleven years old at the time I thought this, I still find amusing to this day
"Shameful" music is by our own definition. Alongside listening to a lot of dark and extreme sounds, I also have time for The Pixies, Chris Isaak, Dinosaur Junior, Vangelis, Roy Orbison, etc as well as rap music from the early 90s and experimental Jazz such as Anthony Braxton. I'm not ashamed of any of this as, in my opinion, it's all relevant to me as a person. It reduces my "kvlt troo Metal" points massively but fuck conformist mind sets adhering to made up rules for insecure long hairs. _________________

Can't confirm this for me.
I also grew up in the 80ies/90ies and Pantera were huge when I was a teenager. Still, I preferred traditional stuff like Iron Maiden, Megadeth or King Diamond, there was no need to listen to hyped shit like Pantera or even worse, Machine Head, Fear Factory or Biohazard.
As said above: They sucked then and they still suck today. Feeling nostalgic about them is like missing Eurodance or Minidiscs. |

I'd guess I wouldn't be the only one who had their musical tastes shaped by seeing Napalm Death on mainstream TV here in the UK
