I received the one from Italy some days ago but haven't read it yet. But it is mostly composed of interviews ... whereas the one from Sweden was composed by stories + excerpts of interviews ...
However I can already say that this book from Italy looks really good, lots of pictures, flyers, logos, etc. _________________

Superfluous! Thumbed through this book at a friend only a couple of days ago for the first time and it was like a 208 paged heart attack. The technically best / most expressive shots are the ones known from the net and advertising and you can check 'em off with five fingers. The rest looks just like some random snapshots found in private photo albums we surely all have from parties, posing and stuff. Plus the quotes are horrible and expose the whole posse as what it actually is... self-centered. No price justifies the buy of this waste of negative and paper. _________________

No rumors at all but that would sure be really interesting.
Talking about books about metal I'm currently reading a thesis (for doctoral studies in anthropology) about metal.
This mostly focuses on the French scene but it's really interesting and its actors. I don't think a English translation will surface though.
Some years ago a similar book was published but it was a thesis in sociology. It was interesing but not that accessible for uninitiated readers. _________________

Academic theses about extreme metal seem to be up and coming these days. Curious when the first questionnaire pops up here on NWN! board.
Jerry, what does anthropology of metal actually means? On what does Mr Walzer focus in his thesis? The extreme metal scene as discrete entity or the interaction with society? Sounds like another pseudo-blabber to me at the first glance, just like this hilarious "A Headbanger's Journey" documentary. Man, with all the fuzz about Sam Dunn's study of sociology and the approach to tap the metal scene from sociological standpoints I expected an interesting view, but there was just warm words. _________________

Well Steffen, I would say that this book is an interesting effort. You cannot forget it's a thesis (highest study level in France).
The author focuses on 15 actors of the French metal scene (such as members of ANTEUS and the boss of Osmose Records among others) and tries to describe the sense of their relationships with metal. Why do they listen metal ? What are their points of view on the violence evoked in metal ? What are their positions in the society ? What are their social origins ? etc.
The author also analyses the bullshit about the inner circle and "les légions noires", trying to describe as much as possible the fantasies surrounding metal.
Considering the fact that this thesis was first supposed to be read by non metalheads, this is rather objective and informative. My GF has for example read some parts of it and I gotta admit that this understanding of metal has evolved since then.
Of course this book is not that accessible considering the fact that it can be described as a work by a scholar for scolars. _________________
