Well taking the exemple of the scene from my own country there are/have been lots of excellent heavy/speed metal from the 80s and on : ADX, Sortilège, Vulcain, Satan Jokers, Blasphème being the most known abroad (at least as far as I know), with lots of others worthy (Killers, Charter, Voodoo Child, Excalibur, Titan, Attentat Rock, H-Bomb etc). Now I know that there were also such bands in Italy for exemple (although in a more sophisticated and Doom approach : Dark Quarterer, Black Hole etc). I figure this must be also the case in many others countries, with bands potentially famous and that have achieved a cult status there but that failed to get popular in the rest of the world.
So what I'm looking for are 80s bands playing classic metal from lesser known countries. By lesser known countries I'm not asking you to find bands from the most deliberately "obscure" parts of the world, but most of all countries NOT known for their trad metal scene : Spain, Greece etc. |

Spanish scene of heavy metal was (and still is) a stinky piece of shit. Check out Barón Rojo (first 3 albums are masterpieces), Santa, Banzai debut (although I think that this is not easy to like if you're not a spaniard) and some albums of Ángeles del Infierno (e.g. Diabolicca). Most of the rest are pure crap.
This video is so fucking great:

| Somehow, Switzerland never really had something like this. There was normal Heavy Rock like Krokus or Killers and then a quantum leap to Celtic Frost, Messiah etc. |

LEÑO will always be the best Spanish band ever, don't doubt it for a second... debut album was really Black Sabbath fueled and with some galloping bass which had inspired Steve Harris for sure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoKBGszlPfk
2nd and 3rd ones were a tiny bit cheesier but still brilliant, some of their bleak and despairful tunes like "Insisto" and "Qué desilusión" are still some of the best songs ever recorded. _________________ Great deals with: Orionized, DEVORADOR DE PLAGAS, Mental Funeral, MEDICAL_WASTE

Sorry mate but I think that LEÑO is not HEAVY enough to be considered METAL, although their debut is masterpiece, that's sure! If we talk about Leño then we have to talk about ÑU (after all, El Tren is a Ñu song). First album is a brilliant opus of proggresive (only a bit) hard rock.

Ahah I had no idea there was such a Spanish mafia here.
I was really interested in hearing what metal sung in Latin languages other than French sounded like. Strange but most of this Spanish stuff sounds really weird even when the music is actually killer (MURO-Telon de Acero). I know that language barrier was one reason French scene didn't get huge in the 80s but it seems to exist even within different Latin countries, not only between latin/ anglo-saxon groups. |

Their first album has that epic vibe for sure, it's a pity that the sound is pretty lame. On the second album they focused more on their Bay Area influences, but the production improved and they still had their trademark epic moments, even a Celtic Frost "UGH!": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gR2dmJ2z_U _________________ My tradelist (CDs, LPs, 7"s, Patches, T-shirts...): http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10090

Well, everything is so relative man! I've always considered that if their instrumental acoustic called "Se acabó" had made it onto a black metal interlude lots of elite warriors would wear Leño patches instead of Alcest ones!
If it's SPANISH HEAVY METAL what we are talking about you cannot consider yerself true enough until you have tasted the true cult of steel: Veterano, Soberano, Carlos III and Terry Centenario. _________________ Great deals with: Orionized, DEVORADOR DE PLAGAS, Mental Funeral, MEDICAL_WASTE

Sure, language was a big barrier in Spain, bands like Baron Rojo or Obus were HUGE here, as in the 80s Heavy Metal was almost a trend in Spain, but they had no success abroad. Only Baron Rojo tried, playing in a few festivals, even re-recording their second album in English, but they failed.
And sure, I know how Spanish vocals can sound weird to non-Spanish people, they even sound weird to lots of metalheads in Spain who despise these bands only for the Spanish vocals! _________________ My tradelist (CDs, LPs, 7"s, Patches, T-shirts...): http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10090

CROM pronunciation is KVLT!!!!
Sure about the different flavours of latin languages, I remember when I was a teenager and heard first time Trust's Antisocial, I was totally like 'what the fuck is this ???' even if I could read some french.

Same here, lots of people find that the lyrics sung in their OWN language sound cheesy. They'd rather listen to black metal sung in True Kvlt Nordic Tongue, with no lyrics available ahah. |
