Thoughts on this band? I like their music a lot up to and including Utopia Banished, but I can't stand their fucking lyrics. Still, shit like Harmony Corruption kills.

"Mentally Murdered" is hands down 1 of my most influential releases.

Seen them live as well, and they do attract a shitload of scumbags to their shows. Gotta admit they do deliver live though. Those huge amounts of coke they snort must help big time.

yeah, that EP is flawless; just like 'haunting the chapel' it's not enough, shoulda been a full length, dammit..

i still remember first hearing 'scum' in late '88; an in-theknow acquaintance played it for me after pestering him for the most xxxtreme shit, i'd already absorbed the faaaassst stuff ala dirty rotten LP, serpent temptation, first MDC, illusions, etc but hearing 'the kill' and ofcourse 'you suffer' was abit *too much* for me then; prettymuch wrote them off as a dumb novelty...but a few months later i asked him to replay it, for w/e reason, and he ended up giving me a dub of that along w/ UNSEEN TERROR and that was my intro to the world of Earache...

i'd do another boring bio on FETO but i'll just say that it's prob the pinnacle of grindcore perfection; from the SWANS tribute opener to Bill's 'SOB-on-LSD' riffing to mickey's oneofakind blasting to Shane's sickass 'fro, it all fits in that '80s happy accident' way we all love...

still cant get into 'harmony', prob the crappiest recording outof Muddisound (esp snare) and their jump on the florida DM bandwagon was glaringly obvious, no matter how much they denied or downplayed it then..i guess hearing glenn benton screaming along w/ pc environmental lyrix is still pretty funny

havent heard much of the middle period, but they seem to have the right influences (KILLING JOKE, CONTROLLED BLEEDING, SLOWDIVE) and what little i heard sounded pretty good; right amount of experimentation w/ the trademark sound...

back-to-grinding-again stuff does little for me

Scum was my entry into metal, nevermind extreme metal. I think the Peel Sessions album remains my favourite though...the sound is immense.

Everything I've heard post Harmony Corruption has either been dull or cringeworthy.

Which albums/tracks are we talking here? Sounds intriguing if they did go off on this tangent, but I can't say I've anything resembling what you're describing.

I second you there, it's incredibly savage.
About the lyrics, OK their current speeches are boring but old lyrics from the Scum/FETO era were brutal as fuck so no problem to me. Hail old Napalm Death !

Never understood it how this band just continued without any original members under the same name.

Scum and FETO are mandatory here, don't care about the rest.

The politics and opinions are one thing, but NEW Napalm Death with Barney & co. is a killer live band.

well, i can't name any specific trax, i just recall working w/ this metalcore kid in the late 90s and he was rly into their middle period, and the songs i heard were mostly from 'fear emptiness' and the followup...maybe my earlier description was kinda misleading; there were some definite industrial sounds and acoustic passages, maybe a brief psychedelic moment here&there, but still had the growling, blasting, metallic structures, etc so they didnt pull a KATATONIA and completely ditch their old sound..i'm sure i'd like some songs but prob not enough to purchase the cds and hail them as brave lost classics too ahead of the curve...

oh and the peel sessions...the fact that was played @ 3 pm on the BBC while uppercrust 'proper' citizens were having tea and crumpets..wish i'd witnessed that haha...those songs have such an intensity few can match even today..
