Got hold of the 'Battlestaffs in the Mushroom Woods' and 'Seven Bloody Ramparts' CDs a few days ago and they've been on almost constant rotation since.

Amazes me that these guys aren't more widely known, they've got everything...quality riffs, melodies, songwriting, a sound that kind of takes in loads of genres naturally and effortlessly. And best of all, they sound quintessentially English....something which most UK metal doesn't these days.

The reason's probably zero to minimal promotion...

Anyone need a size L Bretwaldas shirt (check out the pic on King Penda website)? If so, shoot me a PM.

Seven Bloodied...just popped up in my iPod and thought about starting a thread until I found this one. Got two cd's from the band back when this was released and still, it feels like it deserves much more attention...

Brief announcement, CALIGARI RECORDS will be releasing BRETWALDAS OF HEATHEN DOOM's Seven Bloodied Ramparts on pro tape soon...more news to come soon...

This is one of my favorite British metal releases of the last few years, so it is an honor to be working on this...

I still think 'Battlestaffs in the Mushroom Woods' is this band's strongest release so far.

Every song on this album is excellent. Take a listen to the songs 'The Haunted Ride' and 'Beneath the Eaves'.

Every time I listen to 'Beneath the Eaves' I can't get it out of my head for days! Such addictive melodies threaded around a stomping rhythm. It's a fucking belter!!!

And if you're hooked on Bretwaldas, make sure you give Symbel's recent album 'Gyddigg - Possessed By The Fury of Wod' a listen too.

Similarly fine ale-swilling pagan metal! Take a listen to the song 'The Only Path' after the intro. It's deceptively simple at first, but the way it builds and builds... truly wonderful stuff. Play it LOUD and soak it all in!!

Really good stuff, still confused why this stuff isnt getting more attention, but fuck it. I am torn between battle staffs and seven bloodied ramparts, both have incredibly strong tracks... favorite songs - a thousand blackened whispers, beneath the eaves, blood of gods and men, welcome the rider, raising the wind, grey wolf, rise... but I hardly ever skip a song when I listen to Bretwaldas, the songwriting is just excellent.

Are there any bands similar to Bretwaldas?

Maybe you didn't see my post above...? Wink

Symbel is a solo project from one of the two Bretwaldas guys.

It's not exactly the same -- I'm sure Sceot set out to create something different -- but as the music is written by the same hand, I'd say there are some similarities in the feeling, rhythms and melodies.

I'm not keen on the earlier Symbel releases; the recent album 'Gyddigg...' is certainly the strongest so far. It flows well after spinning Bretwaldas, especially after '...Bloodied Ramparts'.
