Pirates Press records sound like shit whatever their length is anyway.

You must really hate all those NWN! records then. Checdk the matrix & you'll see that the vast majority of NWN! titles were pressed at GZ via Pirate's Press. I happen to think they sound pretty damn good.

Agreed that release sounds amazing - I can notice the difference on my budget sony shelf speakers

I do not agree. I'm not saying they're complete mud but they still don't sound as good as records pressed elsewhere and far worse than vinyl pressed in the '80ies/early '90ies. A good example of that is the reissue of FOAD, the original still sounds better. What Haunt in the Dark says is truth, GZ does its job extremely well when it comes to the aesthetics with all the posters, stickers, gatefold jackets with all sorts of trickery in them etc, but for those of us who actually listen to the records their products aren't much of a joy to handle.

And to answer the original question, I think record cutting and mastering are arts that have been lost with time?

Those days are gone - nobody has the patience to cut a record the traditional way --- there was a awesome eductional video that was posted here - of a record being cut in the 50's - from studio to store. Just amazing the amount of steps and care it takes to cut a record... I am sure there are a thousand short cuts used now -- I personally dont know shit about the process.. so i probably sound idiotic

You don't.

My mate (who's been releasing records since the early 90's) sometimes tells me about how he used to go to the place he got the records cut and mastered and it would sometimes take an entire day to do just that with the engineer looking at the grooves with a microscope and stuff...

I don't own a CD player and haven't bought any in the last ten years or so. I only listen to records and tapes. I'm just picky and not a collector you can lure with useless trinkets and colour variations.

This forum DOES bring the lolz though Smile

To answer the original question, longer playing times not only cut the volume but also the dynamic range, turning up your volume will also bring up surface noise...

... HOWEVER, the last Ignivomous album is over 24 mins on both sides and sounds fine, but it's only barely over 24 (25 on one side and 26 on the other from what I remember, would have to check the cue sheet again when I get home).

Thanks for all the input. If not Pirates / GZ who do you suggest looking into for good sounding vinyls?

In the mid 1990s I used Alberti Records for a double LP pressing. Alberti insisted on it being a double but a euro label fit it all on a single LP. To me it just seemed like a handy way for Alberti to make an extra $2 grand as the pressings sound the same to me. I also used Acme Records once for a 7". They sent me the wrong test pressings - that was sweet! Laughing

One album is almost reaching 24 mins each side 22:something on A and 23:something on the other the other album is 24:20 and 24:40 respectively. None are into the 25 minutes range.

I also don't like swirly, splatter, polka dotted, whatever vinyl. I do like solid single colored vinyls though. Picture disks look cool but some people say they sound like shit. I've only got one that has tons of surface noise / shitty sound despite repeated cleanings.

Different format, same story. Old picture discs sounded and looked fine, back in the '80ies you could barely tell the difference between regular vinyl and PD in terms of sound. Whoever owns one of those old Noise presses knows what I'm talking about. Once again, the decline in quality of the format coincided with the rising popularity of that one pressing plant.

The only time I ever noticed shitty sound due to length was on the Mentors - You Axed for It Lp. It was weird though, because the whole album wasn't bad quality, just the last two songs on side A took a huge drop in volume.
