Apart from everything, I honestly feel this "waves subdivision" quite sensless, at least for how it is actually made and conceived.
During the so called 3rd wave (and I would say '96 to '00) big bands started their decline while others started their rise. That's all.
True is that many put a lot of synths, symphonic parts, keyboards, castles and medieval swords and churches in their works but that's not the complete reality after all.
It was just a transition era characterized by those solutions. A trend I'd say.
I miss who is the first to have subdivided the history of black metal in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th.... waves but following this way of thinking where should we be now? At the 6th? 8th? Pointless...
Use the correct words in my opinion.
"waves" should distinguish two different periods while "trends" should characterise the different parts of a period.
By the way this is just my point of view so feel free to skip this post

I have really started to like Cryogenic's Celephais (1998) more and more in the past few years. Germany and melodic black metal often times do NOT go well together but this album may be an exception to that rule.

Obtained Enslavement was an amazing band for sure.
Funny that you mention Cryogenic. The female singer is a friend of mine, but I never got around to listen to it. Will do that now.

She did a good job on the album! Plus, the production is just right. I mean the sound is thick enough, especially where it counts - the drums. Occasional cheese on the keyboards perhaps, but it goes with the territory.

If it were possible to interpret the word 'trend' without the negative connotations then I would totally agree with you. |
