Circle Jerks - Group Sex
Black Flag - Damaged
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Boredoms - Pop Tatari
Burzum st
DRI - Dirty Rotten lp
Spazz - La Revancha
Butthole Surfers - Brown Reason to live

My tastes have evolved but this is a pretty accurate list. Also really into Master of Puppets and Sabbath's we sold our souls, but I got those in pre-teenhood.

Edit: also MISFITS Earth AD. Not sure how I forgot that one. In 9th grade a football jock guy looked at my copy of the cd and said "Green Hell? These are Metallica covers."

I didn't start getting involved in underground metal until I was around 17 so my list is fairly lame (but honest).

The Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
Metallica - Black album, first three
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
In Flames - Whoracle
Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery

Dead Can Dance "The serpent's egg"
Anathema "Serenades"
At the Gates "The red in the sky is ours"
Emperor mini LP
Burzum "Aske" mini LP
Morbid Angel "Blessed are the sick"
Deicide "Deicide"
Entombed "Clandestine"
Autopsy "Severed survival"
Sepultura "Arise"

The last two albums were the first "extreme" Metal I ever heard. Of course Slayer, Kreator, Darkthrone, Unleashed, Pestilence etc. etc. were hugely important but those albums there marked defining moments.

pretty hard to keep that list to 10, as most of us also liked the standards - AC/DC, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, iron Maiden, besides other rock/metal.

a bit more than 10 ... but more or less the essence of what listened to in my early teens from around 1989-1993.
