Grendel by Matt Wagner if you are into comics.

That doesn't have much to do with the thread, but those are some great comics.

For sure. I'm a huge fan - I need to get this bastard thing blockmounted oneday:

Hedonism & misanthropy go hand in hand sometimes...

This dude brings back the fun in misanthropy:

If you're looking for someone to make a worthwhile academic argument for being misanthropic you're going to be looking for a long time.

Never said I was looking for books/essays written BY "misanthropes"...

Well you don't have to be a misanthrope to make an argument for being misanthropic. I assumed that by more academic you meant an evaluation of the topic in a scholarly sense, which, in my opinion, is most effectively analyzed from a psychological perspective.

Have there been many psychological studies? That's probably more what I'm interested in.

I'm sure there are tons but how many of those are actually worth your time is another question. For what it's worth my idea of a psychological perspective is Nietzschean in the sense that Nietzsche regarded Dostoyevsky as the only psychologist from whom he had anything to learn. Admittedly this concept muddles sociology and psychology through an existentialist lens but suffice to say that reflections on misanthropy fit pretty well into this framework.

That said, here are some relatively current investigations into the subject:
http://www.unige.ch/ses/socio/publications/dernierespublications/sociograph1/WEB_SOCIOGRAPH_1_complet.pdf
This article examines Switzerland in particular but has some valuable discussion on the topic as well as some interesting formulations of the extrinsic impact of such a worldview.

http://www.dji.de/bibs/96_6736_Prevention_of_Right_Wing_Extremism.pdf
Probably a little more political than you're looking for but these articles tie misanthropy to xenophobia and evaluate the reasons for the relation in light of growing right wing extremism in Europe.

http://www.dji.de/bulletin/e_bull_e/bull2003_e/DJIB_2003.pdf
Xenophobia as a mask of sorts for misanthropy.

https://www.ncjrs.gov/App/publications/Abstract.aspx?id=199232
I don't know if you have ABA access, I know I don't, so I'm not sure if you'll be able to find this full article. However, in it Wahl discusses four extrinsic manifestations of misanthropy, namely: aggressive behavior, xenophobia, deviant behavior, commitment to right wing extremism. I would argue that based on his analysis you could conclude any sort of extremism constitutes an extrinsic manifestation and further that these manifestations only consider the treatment of "aliens" by the misanthrope when in fact, I feel, that is only a small kernel of the outlook.

A lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread is pretty good reading though, I'd rather read 90% of that than this kind of stuff but it can be interesting. There're also a ton of articles written from an American perspective that basically amount to apologist grovelling so I don't feel the need to post those but they're out there.

Eh, it's more fiction but I'd suggest more Houellebecq, Ellis, Dostoevsky and possibly Burroughs.

Pessimistic existentialism will lead you to dozens of anti-industrialization arguments as well as dystopian fiction. Sartre's Existentialism as a Humanism is both short and interesting as a jumping off point though not necessarily pessimistic.

Seconding this. I don't know how many French references I missed, but the books as a whole are truly brainy and see how this house of cards is falling down burning.

I'll always affirm the grandaddy of the genre, Naked Lunch.
