NK7 knows no subtlety, and I don't agree with his "it's only music" stance, but I have to admit that his poser bashing is quite entertaining. _________________ Scrutare et vide quia propheta a Galilaea non surgit! |

Is this what MA were to begin with? And, as far as I remember, Left Hand Path maybe didn't offet technical riffing but isn't exactly crude, simple and raw Death-Metal too... |
First of all, I have some difficulties to understand your questions.
"Is this what MA were to begin with?"
- Yes, when Morbid Angel made their breakthrough with "Altars of Madness", they made that technical-riffing that every other US based nowadays do.
" Left Hand Path maybe didn't offet technical riffing but isn't exactly crude, simple and raw Death-Metal too..."
- Entombeds debut is far more crueder and simplier than Morbid Angel were. I dont look for "most raw and brutal DM", but hate that "technical and most skilled DM sport." You know, there is so much gray area between them. First listen to Autopsy and then skip to Morbid Angel and notice where Entombeds roots are.

The person who associated all the "I_LOVE_PENIS" bands to BLASPHEMY that came at least 10 years before the thing ever started get it all wrong and simply show no serious understanding of the history of Metal, tastes apart. One doesn't have to be a know-it-all and to read every Snakepit issue to have a decent understanding of this history.

If youre referring to me, really wanted to answer but didnt get your point. My point was that I DONT CARE ABOUT BESTIAL WAR METAL BANDS and mentioned BLASPHEMY cause they are grandfathers of that genre and are so holy and untouchable in this forum, so they were great example. Of course I know my "history of metal" (I'm older than 36, you know) but dont see why I should like any band just because they were originators of some genre I dont like.
You know, BEATLES was really important part of rock history, even bigger than BLASPHEMY and MORBID ANGEL together. But should I love them too? Or do you? _________________ Mors fennico more |

MA always had a heavy SLAYER and MF influence. That's the reason they were more technical than ENTOMBED. You may not like it, but I honestly can't see why any person that likes extreme metal can't stand MORBID ANGEL. They made some of the most evil, blasphemous albums Metal ever produced. It's not about riffing here. The riffing was a mean, not an end.
They had a huge influence, and sometimes not for the better. This is something I do agree with. But this only show how much they made an impact.
By the way, you maybe don't fall into this case, but I know 30yo+ that praise DSO being more important than BATHORY, or similar fallacies, often on purpose...
About the BEATLES, I hate most of what they do, but their legacy can't be denied. _________________ Scrutare et vide quia propheta a Galilaea non surgit! |

As I said, like what you want, hate what you want, but don't register ON A FORUM DEDICATED TO OLD-SCHOOL BLACK/DEATH METAL |
NWN as a label is certainly dedicated to that particular sound, the forum clearly isn't and it couldn't be any different since a fairly big chunk of posters here absolutely have no clue what "OS" is all about. If you look at the new threads posted, a good 50% of them is about post-2000 norse stuff and bands which bear little or no similarity to the stuff we old farts drool over.
I think the problem is -once again- the fairly young age of most posters, which obviously are in their early/mid 20ies for the most part. This might sound arrogant and people like to throw shit to my face when I say it, but really I don't see how someone whose first album was Judas Iscariot or Dimmu in 1998-99 can ever enjoy Hellhammer. Most of them seem to think Katharsis is old school, so what can one expect really (btw this isn't directed to Valgrinder, whose views I respect while not necessarily agree with). _________________ Thread derailed

Morbid Angel, my fave-to-hate death metal band
Actually I could start how shitty US way of doing death metal is compared to swedish/finnish/UK way. And MA is great example of those ultratechnical riffing I cant stand... |
Seconded, definitely could never get behind Floridian death metal at all, completely inferior.
And yeah, this whole ancestor worship/reductionist "Thing X starts here, so you have to respect them as the progenitors" argument is very silly. Lots of bands have influences, sure, but so did those bands, and so on, and so on. It's as silly as claiming that you have to respect punk for the influence that it had on metal to spawn thrash which led to black and death metal etc. etc. There's nothing defining or sanctified about the one arbitrary point in history you choose to stop at and revere, save for the fact that it's the one you like/found first. So, no, there's nothing particularly special about Venom, Bathory, Blasphemy, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Bach, whatever completely arbitrary point one wishes to stop at that makes it inherently essential/defining for a genre. It's very possible to regard what came later as eclipsing or improving what came before (we've certainly come a long way since punk music and blues, for instance...). |
It's not so much were thing x starts but where it reaches it's artistic peak or whatever you wanna call it, and in a lot of cases it was in the 80's and early 90's. Punk and blues all have there own highlights. |

Not giving a fuck about some (most likely too many) bands is precisely the reason I'm not going to start thinking about their names for a list like this. _________________ Planet Earth is great to visit but you wouldn't want to live there |
