I have lately been revisiting the "darker days" the old Thrash movement. Albums like Metallica's self-titled, Megadeth's Youthanasia, Overkill's I Hear Black, Testament's The Ritual and Anthrax's The Sound of White Noise etc. Any other similar attempts to stay successful during the 90's?

I think pretty much all the "big" thrash bands had one of those. Sodom is the only one I can think now that never did something like that. And Slayer I guess since Diabolus in Musica is shit but of a total different kind.

Edit: And Exodus but they were disbanded during most of the 90s.

Kreator. From 1992 until 1999 they were all over the place with their albums.

And not really '90s (1989) Onslaught ended their career with "In Search of Sanity". Did not work for them in the end.

And one band that was always more on the commercial side is Meliah Rage. I still have their "Kill To Survive" album.

The "Black Album" isn't thrash.

That's the whole point of this thread, thrash bands that changed what they were doing to stay commercially relevant

I just love "Set the World on Fire" and "King of the Kill" by Annihilator, especially the first one. Also enjoyed Voivod's "Angel Rat" few days ago - a very good record in my opinion.

Yet, Slayer waited till the late 90's to put out their only semi gay record - "Diabolus"...haha.

When most of the Thrash scene was SUCKING HARD, Slayer made good records.....they pretended Death Metal didn't exist and still do...but at least they didn't sell out in the early 90's.

Chaos A.D. was one of them I guess, I can't remember it much as I haven't listened to it since the mid 90's

Neither did Tankard, the most consistent Thrash band ever!

I wouldn't say Tankard is one of the "big" thrash bands. And they didn't need to change genres to suck anyway since they've always been quite mediocre.

Yeah, Tankard is kind of lame. Nothing to special about being consistently mediocre.
