I mostly use streaming services for the car or for listening to music while doing scut work. (I have an office job, which sometimes involves a lot of copying.)

I've been using Rhapsody for about a year now, and I'm thinking about switching over to Spotify. I think Spotify might have a slightly larger metal catalog than Rhapsody. And, Rhapsody will apparently lose licensing rights from time to time. So all the Bolt Thrower I had in my library just disappeared.

Has anyone seen licensing issues affect Spotify's metal catalog?

If I didn't have Spotify, work would be sad sad place. I've recently been educating my coworkers on the history of metal using it. We had an extended session on Celtic Frost yesterday.

I've had a few recommendations for this site too, though I am too lazy to ever check it out. sounds like I may need to change that. are you able to download (safely) from the site, or is it specifically just streams?

Yes. Yes.

Excellent to use when you're not at home with your turntable.

Seems unanimous!

cheers for the information...will buy a sub from them

You won't regret it.
The offline-mode is brilliant and doesn't charge you anything at all.

By the way, just wondering, when you save a playlist/record/song to listen offline, it saves cache or whatever, does that take up a lot space on the phone? How can you delete it later?

Just switch your playlists offline availability back off and it will delete/desync them.
Not sure how much space it takes, but you can lower the sync bitrate quality if you don't have that much space on your phone.

Spotify is a standalone software/app mainly for streaming.
Free version has no limits other than commercials coming between the songs radio style.
Syncing playlists is free (to use them offline) but if you want separate mp3 files, you'll have to buy them. I've never used that download feature since my phone is always online (you'll have to pay a monthly fee if you want to use the mobile version by the way) through 3G and i can stream music basically anywhere and i don't think that many do since the streaming works so well.

What no one has mentioned so far, though, is that the app requires fb login - there's no other way to use it. Now, would you really want your boss/coworkers/other contacts to know that you regularly listen to bands such as GBK. Wink

Why would my boss or anyone I work with know what's going on with my Facebook?

Not true. And even if it was the case you could always turn "private session" on so you can indulge yourself with all your guilty pleasures.

Paid today and have to say, fucking well worth it. Can't replace the feeling of a crackling record but still, the next best thing. The convenience alone if worth the 99kr a month.

Yeah I would say definitely worth it. Has at least 90% of the stuff I listen to and also gives a chance to fully listen to an album before purchasing. Their metal selection is pretty decent and will hopefully continue to grow.
