Hmm, was never really a fan of this one honestly, I remember buying it when it was released, being really disappointed and selling it within a couple of weeks. Hearing it again recently I wasn't quite as down on it, but there needs to be an option that says "ok album, but nowhere near the sheer greatness of Worship Him and Blood Ritual".

They already started to stink on this one, the transformation from "black" to "dark" was already in full progress back then. Sold it long ago.

Ceremony is my favorite Samael release. It took a long long time for me to feel that way but there's no turning back now. There is something really special going on in this recording that carries the music beyond just being the rockish stuff most people hear on the first listen. It's unique enough that I disagree with the idea that more bands should rip this sound off - I don't think many bands could pull it off properly and you'd end up with a lot of really bad groove metal instead.

This album is sheer perfection from A to Z. Every single riff is monumental and the songwriting is pure excellence, just fucking listen to Flagellation or Black trip. One of the pinnacles of the genre and by far Samael's best album.

Come to think of it, SAMAEL should look into re-visiting that sound ASAP.

A few years back I had questioned Vorph about this specific issue, something like "why don't you release an album in the same vein". He said Above would sound really close to CoO and be Samael's heaviest record ever. Yeah, sure thing.

Couldn't agree more. However I would agree that the lyrics are supreme. I really hated the dryness of the production. Especially after how perfect Blood Ritual sounded. Even with a sound more akin to that, and live drums, this album would be twice as good. Of course that only my opinion....

Actually been really surprised to see how popular this album is with many on this board!

By FAR the best SAMAEL album and definitely one of best in the entire genre. And I agree with it being underrated compared to their previous albums. I love Blood Ritual, but Ceremony = Samael finding a sound that's definitely their own. Too bad it didn't last though.

The riffs, vocals, lyrics, vibe, use of keyboards, artwork on CEREMONY = BRILLIANT.

I always thought Ceremony just reeks of evil. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Samael is pretty good, I find some merit to all the albums... I agree it is harder to find in the later releases, but there is still some degree of talent there.

Still though, it would be nice to see some of these guys try to be 'evil' again and quit the dance floor break in attempts. Clubs are never going to adopt this stuff. Laughing

The peak was Closer by NIN and The Beautiful People by MM, that is it. Oh and maybe a couple Rob Zombie numbers, but thats it.

Metal bands, go back to metal! Laughing

Fantastic album. Also, one of the best ever vocal performances in the whole genre.

Are any of you familiar with The Lords of Algol? They released one album in the late 90s, and were basically a reformed Fatal (the Detroit 80s death/thrash band) playing stuff that I always felt was very heavily influenced by Ceremony of Opposites but with a hint more death metal due probably to influences from the members former endeavors.

Give 'em a listen if you're unfamiliar, it's pretty good stuff:
