Dooom had about two good tracks (and there was a superior version of the best one on the split 7" with Loss), this one however is dire. Production sucks (the drums sound like they're off an 80s Phil Collins album) and it's obvious it was written in about a week. Endless plodding, no variation or surprises at all, I didn't get through the second track until I took it out and binned it. This one really proved the band is nothing without Max, and I consider Last... to be one of the top 5 doom releases ever.

I'll respectfully disagree on this one. I can't speak to the production much, as that's definitely more your area of expertise, but I've given this album repeated listens and I really do... well, "enjoy" isn't the term for a funeral doom album, I suppose, but I think it's quite good. I also liked Dooom as well. Neither can match Last Tape Before Doomsday, of course, or the version of "Keep on Selling Cocaine to Angels" on the Agathocles split 7", but they're still both damn fine albums. I think there's no question that Max was an important factor in the band's sound, though. Obviously, the releases since he left have had a different feel and sound, but they still hold up, to my ears at least.

All that said, I doubt I'll ever regularly return to any of their other records the way I do to Last Tape Before Doomsday, but then not many other records I on get that kind of play. As far as funeral doom goes, only Stream from the Heavens and The Monad of Creation are on the same level for me.
