GHOAT - we need to hang for a bit so I can yell at you about the new CARCASS!

Brooklyn has 3 Metal bars and all are worth going to:

Lucky 13 Saloon in Park Slope - has Go Go Dancers
St. Vitus in Greenpoint - has a seperate club inside the bar
Duff's in Williamsburgh - favored by BM and DM bands when they come to town

Unfortunately the best record store for metal is Vintage Vinyl in NJ, and without a car that's basically shot. My suggestion is to do the touristy stuff. Go to the Metropolitan museum of art, the natural history museum, see the new freedom tower, the Empire State Building, and perhaps catch a comedy club or broadway play. You'll have a great time!

For those who want to do the tourist runs with broadway plays, the best option to avoid lines and save some money is to buy tickets to a show in advance. You don't have to stand in line to get in if you already have a ticket, so doing so wastes time. Off broadway shows might differ a bit and are also cheaper, depending on how far off broadway though a lot of them can be more artsy and avant garde type stuff if you're into that style, and the comedy clubs as well. Generally with the comedy clubs (especially with the ones being advertised around times square) the show might be free but will make you buy drinks sort of deal which may be expensive.

aside from teh met always being suggested donation, most places have free/pay-what-you-wish hours. they can be a total shit show. i advise you to go without things that you have to check.. especially at the moma.

moma friday 4-8
whitney friday 6-9
guggenheim saturday 5:45–7:45
frick sunday 11-1

if you smoke and enjoy scotch, this is probably the only bar where you are allowed to smoke inside and tuesdays are whisky night, which means anything up to $20 is reduced to $10. be careful not to spend too much time here. several locations, but maybe the hudson one is nice after a walk on the high line or the uptown locations after a museum.

if you are in the east village and want to slam a number of shots before moving as soon as possible to somewhere better (ie anywhere), the 5 shots of anything for $10 at the continental can't be beat. they have makers mark. that being said, this is the kind of place where i won't even try to aim for the toilet.
