I'd recommend staying away from Branikald's Triumph Des Willens and Forest's In the Flame of Glory. Both albums suffer from Kaldrad's Kermit the Frog/Isengard vocals. Nitberg has the same problem, but the split with Volkoten fucking slays.
Early Branikald is some of the best black metal ever recorded in my opinion.
One of my favorites:

Tirebeb, didn't you use a piece of the cover of Stormheit for your avatar? |

Triumph des Willens and In the Flame of Glory rule as well!
One of the finest moments of Forest... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2hNSAUc-HQ

I was going to post virtually the same thing. TDW is definitely recommended, even if it's markedly different to the rest of Branikald's output. My suggestion would be to try both Blikk Av Kald and Triumf Des Willens and go from there.
Agreed The Fatelancer is an immense track (the coda with the synths is emotive in a way no amount of post-black-metal bands can achieve), though the rest of ITFOG is a bit naff tbh. |

95-97 stuff is their peak, as far as I am concerned. "Varg..." through "Kveldulv" for Branikald; Verdandi & Berustet for RD, first 2 Forest. |

Start with Branikald's Рдяндалир (Rdyandalir) and Stormheit, as well as Forest's Заревом Над Прахом (Like a Blaze Above the Ashes). If you like those, check out all the early Forest and Branikald albums. From there you can move on to the later stuff and the other projects (Raven Dark and Nitberg being the most notable in my opinion). |

Northern Heritage has some Branikald, Nitberg, Forest and Raven Dark. Not everything but for sure something to start with.
Big part of the CD's are easily available on discogs and not expensive at all. This kind of extremely raw material doesn't appeal everyone, hehe... _________________ Heavy Metal Nuts

If you're not averse to downloading, find the unreleased Vargleide. If you are, buy it the minute someone releases it because it's one of my favourite BBH releases. |

I've always found the opener of Hladovzor/Blikk Av Kald very impressive, really trance inducing and 'beautiful' in it's simplicity.
But my favourite of non-metal songs from BBH has to be Winterhowl from first Forest LP. It's not instrumental in the literal sense, as Kaldrad uses howls and whispers there and there, but this is some of the most atmospheric (no bullshit) music composed. The second instrumental from that album wasn't mentioned too:

Full agree here, the first Nitberg-EP stands out though, it has some nice Isengard-vibe.
For the unreleased material, Vargleide and Rundagor is very good. |

Triumph des Willens has some amazing songs. I don't understand why people dislike it so much.
In the Flame of Glory on the other hand is not good at all. |
