I'd prefer WAVs or a copy of the original disc for the recording process...

The MP3-function would be more for myself.

That's what I do for my label releases. When the band send me the releases via the WWW., I always insist that they are in WAV format, because making a release from a MP3 is an oxymoron!!

Just picked this up today at a second hand shop near my house:

My old tape deck died on me about a month ago so I needed a replacement. So far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I have a techy question. Lets say I have recording that I want to release on cassette that I wish to keep out of the digital realm for the whole process. I tracked to 1/2" multitrack, and mixed down to 1/4" 2 track.

There are two ways to go from here, either I take that and bounce it to cassette and create a 'cassette' master or dub the consumer's cassettes directly from the reel and use the reel as the master tape.

Obviously the second option is strictly 'better' since there is no generation loss, but that involves wear and tear on my mixdown reel to reel, as well as possible wear on my master tape. I suppose I could mix down several 1/4" tapes but since there is no automation I will be riding the faders the whole time meaning each master might be slightly different.

If I went with the first option would noise reduction help that situation significantly? Are there EQ considerations I should be making?

ok I guess depending on how it's working, you have more or less of a problem. if its mechanic a skilled guy should be able to repair the trigger, but if its electronic, it'll be difficult.

Yeah I'm going to have to get it checked out if I want to fix it. I'll probably just let it go since I paid like $15 for the deck, haha.

I'll just have to wait until I get a fully functional setup for dubs. No big loss.

push the "dubbing/mixing" button to the on position, otherwise the source tape does not record at all much like you are describing here. mine does this exact same thing if this said slim little button is not in the on position

try this before wasting money at the shop!

If you want the ultimate in cassette advice go to www.tapeheads.net
Just print off the lists they have or keep it on your phone and prowl around looking for what's good locally. The postage rates would kill you.

My tapedeck took a turn for the worse today. Left deck will only play the left track and the right deck sounds like I have a phase effect on it. Don't know if it's the motor, head, or both. I'm going to clean it and that might fix the left deck, but I don't think that's the issue with the right one.

Edit:After taking a vacuum and sucking all the dust/hair/lint that was in each deck and then going over all the metal parts the tape touches with isopropyl alcohol & Q-Tip the right deck now works. The left/deck 1 started to eat a Morbosidad tape so that one has problems that are more than likely costlier to fix than this tape deck is worth.
