I can't stand yer average Black Metal Vocals. That and the usual lack of bass totally destroys a genre for me.

Alright, this doesn't go just for black metal, but what is it with people ALWAYS claiming they can never hear bass in metal? It's usually easily audible, it just doesn't necessarily have a lot of low-end BASSINESS to it.

Not an attack on you or your opinion, it's just something I noticed while reading a lot of reviews and seeing comments places.

I agree 100% ! I ALWAYS here people and reviews bitching about not hearing the bass..... are they listening to the same album I am?? You just have to LISTEN for the bass, and you will hear it. My stock car speakers make the bass sound great (and Im not some ghetto-bass-bumping trash or anything).
Perfect example is the latest Slough Feg (ape uprising). I read many reviews that mentioned the lack of bass.....and when I put on the album, its non stop thunder bass, on all the songs!

All were kind of distracting/detracting at first, now I love them.

And I totally hate Lee Dorrian's singing.

Yeah I have the hardest time turning people onto the mighty Sabbat because of Gezol's weirdo Japenglish singing style lol.

Another one is Messiah Marcolin

I always prefer vocalists for the most part who are of an aquired taste (unless they're REALLY shit!) but often it gives a band a unique edge.

I mean for example at the time of Archgoat, there weren't many bands doing black metal going that low with their vocals (I'm sure there were others though...) , or Lust sound different because Sabazios over the top of totally chaotic violence has such a disorientating sounds. Or even Bethlehem with their vocals etc.

The low vocals definitly help give Archgoat a unique sound. In the case of Lust, however, no matter how much I try, I just can't get into it because of the vocals. Just seems way too silly for me. Can't take it seriously.

Personally, I love Rainer Landfermann's vocals on Bethlehem - Dictius Te Necare, but they might fall into this category for someone else. A few others:

Nattramn/Silencer
Martin Lang/TODESSTOß
Aguares/Bael (Fra)

The first time I heard Ihsahn doing clean vocals on Anthems I thought I was going to shit myself with disgust. After a year or so I still couldn't stop laughing when I heard them, and now I think they fit the album perfectly and I enjoy the whole damn thing.

Speedwolf- Kinda a weird Lemmy/Danzig hybrid thing going on.

Umm... fuckin' kills!!!!!

And yeah, Grave Digger "Witch Hunter" rules as well.

I just take the sound of the vocal in context of the whole of any album. Can't really spend time singling things out, ruining a record.

But of course, if it sucks from the get-go, fuck'em....
