I personally think that women should be treated equally to men - as I don't see any fucking difference. People always ask me how it is to be a women in metal, and I always wonder why the fuck they ask me that! Maybe I'm lucky and I live in a tolerant city or something? Cathy, do you have the same problem?

Most people have treated me well enough. Other than getting my ass pinched at shows (Shocked Confused) it doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

I agree with Caina -- women (and men) should pursue their own interests, whether they fit gender roles or not. Life's way too short to dwell on this kind of thing.

How do they expect you to explain that one?

"It's like having a nose, except it gets erect and shoots semen!"

"It shapes my entire thought process!"

"Imagine being an elephant with a very sensitive trunk..."

Option 2 seems to be closest to the mark.

The problem with publications like such as Bitch is that, while they're better than nothing, they're a lot like the idiotic jargon that punks used to hurl at metal heads. It's not incumbent on music to have a socio-political purpose of any kind, and drawing attention to gender exclusion that was mostly accident in the first place, doesn't help. Hell, look at Dana Duffey and, like her or not, Angela Gassow. They're metal enough that they don't need to draw attention to their femininity all the time. Their music is enough of an assault.

Of course, Dana Duffey is the better singer/songwriter. Twisted Evil

Shit, look at LSK (bassist) for Antaeus/Hell Militia.... she is a maniac on the bass...and beats the shit out of most male bassists. She doesn't dress like a whore either, which seems to be a requirement for females in metal bands.

I have honestly never met anyone into metal that judged a band on any criteria relating to the gender of the people in the band.
The article complains about things like female metalheads being judged to be "too manly" and other such issues, and for fuck's sake, that is NOT happening because of sexist metalheads. It is happening because normal people think ALL metalheads are freaks, male or female.
It almost seems to me like not only does the author want to force women to do everything for no reason other than the fact that they are women, she also wants every single style, art, lifestyle, etc. to be completely mainstream and accepted, which defeats the entire fucking purpose.

I doubt what I typed just now makes a lot of sense, but fuck it. I think I defeated the article anyway.

It's not a stretch for me to imagine why metal women are approached this way. Men typically have a higher concentration of testosterone than women and are therefore more prone to aggression and violent activity- and metal is an aggressive and violent music at it's core, thus is primarily made by and appeals to men and their basic biological needs. Metal women are simply more of a novelty. This isn't always the rule, but consider if it's not merely a coincidence, which it isn't.

I reckon I kind of know what it's like to be a woman in metal, I used to have huge tits. Still am a tit, but don't have tits - lost 3 stone.

Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth once said something about the neccessity to make an issue of "women in rock music" and feminist rock/bla in general, havng a special seperate identitiy and sociological niche... it was something along the lines of "Leave me out of that crap".

I think in some cases many people give females in metal more credit than is deserved. For example, generic female death metal vocals ala Angela Gossow. People say she is an "amazing and outstanding vocalist" and overcompensate her 'talent', when in reality if she had been a male nobody would give that band a second glance.

On that note, the only metal females know is pots 'n' pans Laughing

Yeah, Kathleen Hannah has spoken on similar lines. Do you know which interview Ms. Gordon said that in?

Given what their songwriting turned into once Gossow came on board, you're absolutely right there. I'll have to say for myself though, that I found their songs pretty decent when they still had Johann Liiva on vocals.

They were at least more lively at that phase. However, I think the real equation is this:

"Now that we have a chick on vocals, we can write the same song over and over again and focus on our wanky solos!"

Someone once suggested this paradox to me:

If men do everything better, does that include blow jobs?

Let's face it: homosexuality is the future of metal.
