It's not a stretch for me to imagine why metal women are approached this way. Men typically have a higher concentration of testosterone than women and are therefore more prone to aggression and violent activity- and metal is an aggressive and violent music at it's core, thus is primarily made by and appeals to men and their basic biological needs. Metal women are simply more of a novelty. This isn't always the rule, but consider if it's not merely a coincidence, which it isn't.

I don´t think that this biological explanation is totally valid. There are so many things that shapes us during life that has a huge inpact on us. Just take a look at sociology and gender science. The same with saying that metal music is agressive, I agree it is, but not in an universal way. We read it as agressive since we agreed upon it to be that. I rather think of this as if we play along with social codes and standards neither we know them or not. But this is way out of the metal forum Very Happy

Sure it's completely valid. Biology alone is a major factor in how our lives are shaped, and it's why men and women are hardwired to seek differing avenues of experience and pleasure.

The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature by Stephen Pinker

Great resource on how biology determines just about everything.

That extra testosterone in the womb? Yep, made a different critter.

Take another group with higher testosterone even, and you get different behaviors.

I'm pretty sure his point was that whether you listen to metal or not has to do with a lot more than just your testosterone levels.

Unfortunately not, sorry.
As far as I remember it was part of a feature which was aired on German arte TV, broadcasted more or less recently which means not more than two years ago according to my sense of time.

There are other factors, but testosterone is probably still the overriding factor at play here.

I don´t say that biology is not valid but it can´t explain all of our social behaviors. The sterotypical categories of male and female are nowdays regarded as social constructions which are not the same in all cultures.

For a good introduction : http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=ExjWDtstbQYC&oi=fnd&pg=PP12&ots=UOFINHzNmc&sig=2jbsJ8S7cPOCV7les6ZPeQZqjSE#v=onepage&q=&f=false

There is a classical split in these kind of subjects between sociology, psycology and biology. I really dont think that one shall be too determined and focused on finding explanations in just one category, history has proven that to be very unreliable.

I'm going to stick with the hard sciences here.

Clear biological differences always lead to different behavior and abilities. Can you think of any exceptions?

I think that it is absurd to assume that any one factor causes a person to develop particular artistic tastes.
It may very well be that biological factors predispose people toward certain things, but that does not mean that they must manifest themselves in any way whatsoever, just as people who do no possess said factors could just as easily wind up with that same result.
One of the most classic errors in reasoning is assuming a causal relationship between two things when any number of elements could produce either one.
