Despite my general hatred of the Legion driven era of this band, when Mortuus/Arioch took over, I decided to take a listen. "Plague Angel" was pretty boring, but I enjoyed "Rom 5:12" more than anything they've released since "Opus Nocturne"..... although Rom wasn't the best album ever, I think Mortuus has breathed some much needed life into this stale washing machine of a band.

Has anyone here heard the new album (Wormwood) ?? I've read lots of great reviews, many of them saying this is the best thing they've ever done. These reviews weren't exactly on 'underground' sites like this one, so I took them with a grain of salt...that's why Im asking your opinions, as it seems people on here share my general taste in metal.

After La Grand Danse Macabre, lost interest in this band.

I lost interest looong before that ! Nightwing had a few good track, but Legion was a TERRIBLE, one dimensional singer. But, like I said, Rom 5:12 renewed my interest in them a bit...they sound like a totally different band, you should check it out.

Well, I have only listened to 2 songs from the record, but I can say that it is much better than mid-era Marduk stuff, but it still sounds like a more cleaned up Funeral Mist or something. Nothing amazing at all in my book.
Of course, I have never liked Arioch/Mortuus' vocals whatsoever. That is not the only reason I dislike the songs though. They are very heavy and ripping at first, but after awhile they just fade out of memory. I literally cannot recall a single bit of a song.

I would much rather listen to this record than "Maranatha."

At the risk of sounding like I'm trying to out-cult you all, I don't like anything after Dark Endless. I've never really understood the appeal of Marduk, I always thought they were too clean to come across as truly aggressive and over powering, and the riffs weren't really interesting enough to make them a "riffy" band. If that makes sense... which it probably doesn't! Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the opinion, thats what I was afraid of..that they blow the 'average' metalhead away, but are nothing special after repeated listens to the more astute listener. I still might check it out if a friend burns it for me or something, but I doubt I'll buy it.
Haven't heard Maranatha yet though.....I hear sooo many diverse opinions about it. Some love it, some hate it.

Bands like Marduk, Immortal, etc. to me are an example of a case when downloading is essential. If everybody just buys the new Marduk blind, it only encourages the band to spend 20 more years barfing mediocrity into recordings. Laughing

I only like the cover art of Those of the Unlight... wicked piece of artwork. Don't remember any music though...

it seems like it's their best album in a long time, but i can't say i'm dying to listen to it again. it's definitely way too long and somewhat uneventful overall despite some okay writing. the material is pretty varied - it's definitely no "panzer division" blast-beat you into boredom .fest.

they pretty much lost me after "opus nocturne", although "live in germania" is pretty decent. i agree that legion was not the greatest singer. he sort of sounded like an old lady with asthma or something.

"the sun has failed" was their best song.

Better than Rom 90210, but not as good as Plague Angel.

Arioch's vocals have improved this band immensely. Riffs are still quite unmemorable, standard Marduk fare if you ask me. At least there's no boring duet with Primordial.
