To Label people,
Do you think it's worth the time and money to press up 1000 promo CDs to send out to magazines and radio stations? It almost seems like an exercise in wasting money and reducing sales for the real product. I was thinking about making promos for the upcoming Nocturnal Graves full length and maybe the Ignivomous recordings on one promo CD. _________________ The only email I have access to is nwnprod (at) gmail (dot) com. As a label, I think it's a waste of money...
If you press 1000 copies of a regular CD just save 50 or so for promotional purposes... you can mark them as promo with a holepunch on insert or a PROMO sticker on cover... I don't think there's much more than 50 realiable media / business contacts worldwide.
For bands it may work, a factory printed demo CD with a slim cardboard cover looks very better than a cheap CD-r. It also gives that "professional" appeal to the band for the label or zine that receives it for evaluation or a review...

There was a promo CD made by HHR and another label some months ago that seemed to be a good idea...
It was something like a compilation CD with 20 songs or so on it....
This is a better idea than putting just one or two bands on a promo CD. |

It is mostly to help the band with self-promotion. It will most likely not generate orders, but it should help with setting up tours etc if more people hear the band.
Of course it will not hurt to gain more customers since I want to release so much more stuff before I die. The money has to come from somewhere... _________________ The only email I have access to is nwnprod (at) gmail (dot) com. I do not have access to my old Yahoo addresses.

| Yosuke, I think sending out 1000 promos (that is a pro-pressed promo with the entire contents of the original recording) is a waste of time and money. I can understand if you send, say, 50 promos out to zines for promotion, but if you're sending them to labels or whatever to see if they want to carry your disc why not just send them a disc containing a few songs instead? That's how labels/bands used to do promos back in the good old days. |

I had an advert from a french pressing plant to make 200 promo Cds in card cover. That's quite cheap and enough if you want to send out promos to stores, radio or big distributors.
And you will have some delight in seeing you promos sold on 2nd hand at normal price, or in disc conventions, sellers telling that it's a gift, okay but they can sell a gift after all, or that it's rarer than normal edition because promos cds are printed in a shorter run... |

in this modern age of internet , wny need promo cds . Just set up some mp3s on this site . The zines etc can check out and hear your future releases , see the art work . No need to pay for any postage,cd promo cd press or any thing.
Just send an email and let them check everything out online. _________________ Metal Archives is the place legends are born.

Those will be put to the spam folder right away. You wonīt believe how many "please listen to my mp3īs" mails even small labels get every day.
When speaking zines, they always want the full ready product and because of the amount of stuff they receive all the time they wonīt waste their time with something they donīt have in their hands.
Big mags donīt even review CD-R copies of actual albums. And I know of quite some which want 5-10 copies of the album for an review.
If you have the opportunity to press 300 (or whatever you want to send out) copies in a cardboard cover in addition to an actual CD pressing I think the price would be OK and therefore the whole thing getīs interesting. |

its only because most these zines want free cds , nothing to do with much else, All the real zines paid for copies of my release . I can understand a distrobutor wanting to see the real thing, but then a promo isnt the real thing.
Its just a case of if we dont get free stuff we wont promote. Its a bad habit from greedy fan/zines _________________ Metal Archives is the place legends are born.
