I rant, I rave... I fucking hate cassettes, they are terrible and sound like shit. So why I ask? Why not CDs selling for $5 instead? Why the need to pretend cassettes are a cool and worthwhile format?

They don't all sound like shit. Tapeline = shit. 2 Plants in N. America do the trick, and well.

Cassettes for demos. Nothing else, at least that is how I view it. CD and Vinyl for everything else.

they are inherently bad.. the narrow tape and the slow tape speed make them a fundamentally poor media. Its amazing they achieved the merely reasonable sound quality they did at their peak with the type IV...

I have no particular problem with cassettes, but I almost never find myself listening to and buying them these days. If a band re-releases a cassette recording on CD, I will immediately buy it and sell the tape. I've always loved CDs above any other format.

Tapes are great for one reason, more or less, and it's that they are usually the cheapest to produce per unit in quantities less than 500. That makes it a good format for demos and other releases early on in a band's career before they are able to sell any more.

The whole trend of every halfway desirable full length coming out on tape at $8-10 doesn't really need to happen, but I guess it doesn't matter if they're selling.

Is this really a true statement? Surely the cost isn't a factor... a blank tape must cost as least as much as a blank cd if not more... and a cheap CD is still CD quality audio... a cheap tape is, cheap tape audio quality... please, correct me if I'm wrong.

I find the "demos only" sentiment to have no real basis. Tapes can sound absolutely stellar. They're more fun to rip than vinyl, too.

Tape:
Normal: 14 KHz
Chrome Dioxide: 16.5 KHz
Metal: 19 KHz

CD: 22.05 KHz

that alone. set aside the noise, hiss, wow and flutter...

anything you put on cassette can only sound better on CD

Quite useless bitching really.

If tapes are done properly I have no problems with. But "professionally manufactured" ones are usually more fucked up than manually, homedubbed ones.

And professionally manufactured tapes actually cost more than CD's to make. But the final price to customer is expected to be lower than CD, so there's where it goes wrong.

JUST OFF WORK AND LISTENING TO THE WEARG-HÆDEN METAL WAR TAPE. NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT FORMAT. SOUNDS FINE TO ME. THOSE TWO LIVE TAPES THAT DARKNESS ATTACK JUST PUT OUT (BW/DS) ARE PERFECT FOR THE MEDIUM AS WELL.

admittedly I didn't make that statement with any technicalities in mind, and I'm surely biased. Basically when people say they sound like shit, I can't find myself aligning with that perspective at all. There is indeed all that baggage that comes with the tape sound, but it's not something that hinders my own listening experience.

This conversation again?

When physical media is completely obsolete, the quirks of the actual physical part become more important than the musical fidelity. You're mostly just selling to collectors at this point. Also tapes are definitely the cheapest / easiest for short runs.

When they're dubbed properly I love tapes. Otherwise they piss me off when I get a terrible dub.
