This has probably been covered a bunch of times in the various equipment threads here but I need some quick advice.

I moved recently, and my friends who I had moved in with had an unopened turntable, and let me set it up in my room to be able to listen to my records. After I assembled it I turned on the power and the automatic play function activated and placed the stylus on the rubber turntable mat, which I quickly removed.

I was wondering if this would have damaged the stylus in some was that wouldn't be apparent while listening to records (they sound fine) that could be damaging them without me noticing.

I wouldn't worry about it, if the records sound fine I doubt the stylus was damaged.

That has happened to me few times as well. So far the needle has not gone broken and the records have played just fine.

Cool. I guess with my inexperience and all I've been told of the fragility of the stylus has made me a bit neurotic about dealing with turntables.

the needle is industrial diamond and shouldn't be damaged from a split second on a rubber surface

My table is completely manual, so I have to place the stylus on the record everytime. Every so often I will not have it close enough to the starting groove and it will slip off and drag the mat for a split second. This has happened a few times with no lasting effect. And fuck, a decent enough stylus is less than $100, so if you DO break it, it is not the end of the world.

Mine is automatic too and it happened to me a few time as well, but it never got damaged... you can put the "pause" to get up your stylus before playing, adjust your stylus right on the beginning of the lp and then put it back on play.

That should not affect it all, but I would remove the cart to inspect debris, and a washing of the stylus to make sure the gunk it just carved up doesn't get inside your records. Though, I am anal about cleaning. Wink

I seem to have irreversible damage to the counter weighted tone arm lever on my project player. Seems someone decided to fuck around with it and forced it all the way down. Anyone had this problem and is it fixable? It's not that it doesn't play records or anything, just throws the whole counterbalance system out the window. Basically there's more weight on the records than necessary.

this WILL fuck your records up , too much weight digs the stylus into the grooves to much , you need to replace the tonearm if its stuck , theres counterbalance for a reason

This.

Though, lighter weight is worse because of skipping and tracking issues. Get a measuring tool so you're at the peak balance weight.

What kind of cheap piece of shit turntables do you all own that have automatic play functions?

If you cannot control the weight distribution on a tonearm by the use of an anti skate mechanism then you are doing damage to the LP and possibly the stylus.
