Great amp ive tried pairing Bad cat amp heads to other cabinets like Mesa and old Marshall cabs fitted with Celestion vintage 30's doesn't quite work it sound descent but lacks that bite. |

I'm playing this with G12-65s in a 1980 Marshall 4x12....sounds perfect! These sound great on the EL-84 side with some Celestion Golds or Blues. |

My head is a different model (mine's a Kustom 200 not a 100; I stole this picture from some random website, did not take it myself) but the cab and bass are the same. Fucking 70s to the maxxx......... I go direct, no pedals. |

Guitars:
Gibson Flying V
Gibson SG Voodoo
Ibanez RG570 (I-LOVE-PENIS-built)
Amp:
1983 Marshall JCM800
Pedals:
OCD Fulltone v.4
The thing I need now is a decent reverb, I have a Marshall Deflector but the thing is noisy as hell, so I cannot use it. There’s no reverb on the amp, and it is just too dry for soloing. I was considering the Holy Grail, but when I tested it vs the Deflector in the store, it came off as somewhat less natural (it was a quick test though). The tubes on the amp are not that hot, so full preamp + full OCD drive = Mötorhead ca. 1979 “distortion” level, although the sound of the thing is awesome once it’s warmed up. Though I am a fan of less is more when it comes to distortion and drive there is a limit to how low it’s possible to go when playing metal. The Hendrix-crunch is a bit too light for Faustcoven.

...why? To cover up the fact that you are unable to handle your instrument properly?
I'm always dubious when people think that using good gear/having a decent sound instantly kills 'spirit' - not necessarily true. To an extent I can sympathise with this sentiment, although all too often this is simply an excuse for people with zero ability who want to hide behind a wall of noise, claiming it has 'atmosphere'.
Nevertheless, it's nice to see a vaguely useful thread for a change. |

Nowadays I find it hard to understand what people mean in general when they talk about "Good sound" (if that refers to albums like PAINKILLER - I can agree, but many people refer to sterile shit like current DESTRUCTION sound, which in my opinion is anything but GOOD) and "Raw sounding Metal" (HELLHAMMER's first 2 demos are raw as fuck, but you can hear every instrument, there IS atmosphere and there ARE memorable riffs, while stuff like "BAND OF WOLVES" (click here) is simply a pathetic excuse to inability to create a decent song). _________________ Infernal Rock N' Roll: WWW.INFERNALROCKNROLL.BANDCAMP.COM

Perhaps all you really need then is to heat your signal up some more before it gets to your amp for that touch more gain to achieve the tone you're after. I have a JCM800 1987 super lead head that I needed to do a similar thing to, I found that a Mesa Boogie VTwin preamp/pedal did the trick for me for more doom-esque music. Was a very "open" sound but has a ton of weight to it, if that makes sense. Although in Diocletian I use an old green Sovtek Big Muff for crushing gain with lightning fast attack...perhaps not the tone you'd be keen on for your sound though mate haha!!
Shit that Bad Cat above looks tasty as hell!! Gotta love gear porn threads.... |
