Recently got a deal on this Marshall Mini Silver Jubilee combo. 20 watts switchable to 5w. I think it's pretty much perfect for almost all applications, especially recording. As far as live playing goes, unless you're mic'ing the drums (in which case you'd almost surely mic the amps anyways), there is no reason except for aesthetics to use a 100w head with cabinet.

Normally I would say yes but I have yet to have a functional monitor at any show I have played in the past year. I generally just use a Crate Powerblock because it has the wattage and is light but sometimes that isn't even enough with drum racket.

You don't have to insult me. Just explain why I'm wrong.

I kinda agree with IXTAB

In particular if someone is trying to get power-tube distortion from a 100w amp in a small venue where there's a PA system, a much smaller amp would be more ideal in that kind of situation

As for gear, I recently got a micro metal muff, I like how it's only got 3 knobs instead of 6, the midrange has been set at a optimal level by EHX, it makes it easy to quickly get a good tone in my opinion

IXTAB if you join my noisecore band I play through a bi-amp bass setup, an 810 and a 215 through dual Peavey heads. You would NEVER BE HEARD Razz

Also I use 2 DOD Death Metal pedals and an HM-2 so watch out assholes!! Razz

Obviously this is all very situational, and I'm not claiming that this particular 20w amp is ideal for all circumstances. That said, I believe a 100w head plus cab is overkill most of the time.

Regarding monitor sound, I would agree that it would be a crucial element for a smaller amp. However, I can't say how many shows I've seen with huge backlines that still couldn't compensate for bad monitor sound.

If nothing else, I'm glad I got holy ghost to chime in. Cool

Those mini silver jubilees are great.

I am currently doing SG > Mesa Mark V 25 > 2x12 w/ Greenbacks. However I lucked out on a trade this weekend and getting a full Mark V. Was never a Mesa guy until I got one and tweaked it properly.

Only other amp I am interested in is that new Marshall Origin series for that el34 crunch though the Mark V literally does anything close enough.

It's more of a frequency response thing than volume. Even at lower volume, a bigger power section would have a bit more depth/width and low wattage amps can sound a bit "narrow/squashed".

Whether that matters in a mix or not is a whole other question though. Laughing

Can anyone recommend any other decent-sounding combos as small as the Marshall above for home use? That amp looks, and probably sounds, good, but the price is close to 1000 in Europe. 500 is really the most I can pay at this point.
