Currently:

Amp:
JCM900 100w (not as bad as people say - just a little flat when the gain is down) w/ 4x12. I mean it's not great or anything, but it'll do in a pinch and I got it real cheap.

Guitar:
Gibson SG

Effects (this is where I go a little koo koo):
Dyna Comp clone made by a friend
Big Muff
Whetstone Phaser
Deluxe Memory Man
Malekko 616 analog Ekko
Holy Grail Reverb

And another friend is currently building me a fuzz face clone and I'm eyeballing craigslist for a chorus pedal.......

1989 Gibson Les Paul Custom
2009 Gibson SG Standard (backup guitar, gift from wife)

Fender Telecaster (American, straight up, chrome red, rosewood board)
Fender Stratocaster (American, straight up, sunburst and beat to shit)

Mesa Dual Rec (three channel, only use one channel, ha!)
Mesa Mark IV (from the 80s, when they didn't suck ass)
VHT Deliverance 120 (behold! the power of KT88s!!)
Soldano Cab (great proprietary speakers!)
VHT Cab (also great proprietary speakers!)

No effects.

Guitar. Cable. Amp.

And for the record, I enjoy having all this nice gear, but if you gave me a Schecter and a Line 6 I'd make it work. Being on tour before, you sometimes have to play through some shitty amp or something.

Gear is not everything. Sure, I enjoy having nice things, and I seek them out, but they are tools. Just like one may have a favorite hammer, a skilled craftsman in certain situation can make due with any type of hammer he is given. It took me YEARS to understand and get this, but now that I'm here, it's all smooth sailing.

Fuck gear forums. Bunch of assholes with expensive gear and can't play a lick. Embarrassing. Play with what you have. If all my shit goes away tomorrow, I'll be bummed... but I'll make something work.

'61 reissue has a bit more quality control being thrown its way by Gibson, which is really nice. They've been spotty at best for the last ten years. That is not to say you can't find a good new one though. It's just difficult.

The neck profiles are totally different too. I dig the slim profile of the '61. I wish I had one. The SG standard is totally fine though. I beat the hell out of mine and it's been great.

I have a Gibson Les Paul Jr Lite guitar that I absolutely love even if it comes with P-100s. I often wonder if I should switch them for P-90s but I'm not sure how it'd really sound and if I'd regret it in the end so I don't know... I play it through a JCM 2000 DSL 401, which is very good for what I need. Bought it second-hand almost 15 years ago, still sounds awesome.

Been thinking of changing my cassette 4-tracker to digital 8-tracker. But now I will miss that analog distortion that comes when I recorded guitars. Know that distortion what comes from the tape when guitars are peaking on red, it sounds like something been broken in a good way? With digital equipment peaking sounds like electric fuzzing or something like that.

And no, I dont want to mic my guitars, I prefer line-in method. With mics I only get so weak sound, even if I use small ghettoblasters (with broken speakers) instead real guitar amps. Guitar amps only gives natural and correct sound.

Any good tips?

Have you tried playing through a wahwah switched on? Gives a clunky/thinner sound to your distortion that helps you sound like Confuse a lot...

ough, i might go farther down the neck but 12-21 seems good for now. i heard its extremely hard to play chords in tune on the scalloped lower frets so im thinking ill stop at 12 and fuck around up there for a bit.
