So many records have intros that you either skip or wait impatiently for them to be over but a few recordings have intros etc that you actually want to listen to and which accentuate the recording.

i was thinking about this becaus i was listening to the advance to the new nocturnal graves the other day at NWN hq and the organ intro is integral to the effect of the album.

obviously blasphemy blood upon the altar and fallen angel of doom have execeptinal intros and interludes.

my favorite intro however is the intro to ofc's stillbirth machine. its long but so worth it once chuck keller's guitar abruptly cuts in. the intro itself is not overbearing and creates an unsettling atmosphere that perfectly suits the onslaught that is to come.

other thoughts on this and other albums, 7"s, tapes etc with killer intros?

I've always enjoyed Ancient rites' medieval inspired intro's. Fallen angel of doom was another one I was going to mention.

Agreed. The introduction to the "Hellfire's Dominion" album is just supreme. Desaster have always done a superb job in opening and closing their songs/albums.

Some other favorites off the top of my head (including openings):

-Satyricon (intro to "The forest is my throne")
-Apolokia (The Italian band; both demos featured killer intros and outros)
-Behemoth ("Return of....." features some stellar interludes)
-Emperor ("Alsvartr (The Oath)")
-Burzum (the opening to the song "Det som en gang var" is just so perfect; and easily the best/my favorite black metal song of all time)
-Bathory ("Enter the eternal fire" opens in a similar way "Det som en gang var" does, leading up to the action ahead like a Wagnerian opera)
