I bought two first pressings of vinyls that were listed fairly cheaply off a guy for $300, but prior to committing to the order he sent pictures and it's legit he owns the copies and will send tracking information when full payment is received and he has shipped

However, the order on Discogs is at 'Buyer contacted' stage and I've been e-mailed that he wants me to pay in $40 increments so that "PayPal doesn't withhold the money."

Never experienced that before, so I'm wondering if there's anything I don't know about which would make this a scam? I would still be ok to get the money back via PayPal claims if it doesn't work out?

Any advice appreciated.

Pay in full via the Discogs invoice or not at all. Paying as he has suggested will invalidate PayPal and Discogs seller protection.

Yes of course he is fucking with you - tbh i would walk away right now.

Thanks. Is it possible to be invoiced through Discogs and pay in the increments he is suggesting and still be covered? I'm suspecting that can't be done. Is there such a thing as PayPal holding money for two weeks of anything over $40?

PayPalís terms I think vary in different territories. Certainly Iíve heard of them holding funds on new accounts until goods are confirmed as received.

No, donít pay in increments. All that does is look like you are working together to circumvent their terms - they are more likely to ban you than help you.

Yes, thanks for your help so far. Paying in increments is off the cards.

Suppose we go the normal route and I pay the full amount through Discogs and PayPal and then PayPal decides to hold the funds for two weeks. Would he be able to refund the money immediately without having to wait the two weeks so he can relist the items again straight away? Would he be out of pocket for Discog fees using this method?

Just trying to cover all angles. If the above paragraph doesn't work I will most likely cancel the order.
