i think i might WANT to like doom more than i actually do......especially when it comes to current stuff.
i REALLY like all the pagan altar stuff that i've heard, witchfinder general, some paul chain....goatlord, DSC, but that's perhaps stretching it, i feel that they're so much more than doom.
i dream of finding the perfect HEAVY and slower record someday. i know it must be out there. |

Samael "blood ritual" (entire album is slow and powerfully heavy)
Incantation "mortal throne of nazarene" (doomy parts galore, but the last song is the crucial death doom track. I'm almost ready to say that it's the best death doom song ever written)

Ok, so you like 3-4 Doom Metal bands.... and 2 of those are PAGAN ALTAR and WITCHFINDER GENERAL, which are pretty close to the same ballpark as HO13... so I'm not sure why you're giving up on the HOUR OF 13 so quickly.
This album does take time to grow on you I think.... give er a few spins when you've got a drinkin buzz... 
And I do have SAMAEL - Blood Ritual instock.

Check out the latest Electric Wizard "WitchCult Today" - i would go so far to say as they out-Sabbath Sabbath themselves!
Recorded entirely in an analog studio, i think it captures that doom-y vibe perfectly.
As for death/doom, Asunder really plays it well, so did disembowelment, which is oppresively heavy..

yeah, i need to pick that up. the last thing i heard by them floored me.
asunder...can't really get past the vocals. not yet anyway.
disembowelment...have always been curious.

i might give it a few more spins. the difference between hour of 13 and those other two bands is that i didn't have to try and like them. i just did. right away. but we'll see. there are surely records out there that have taken me a while to "get".
oh yeah and i was drunk and high when i first spun the HO13, so i know that wasn't the problem. |

Oh ok! Good! Drunk and High, now that's a combination..
Alright yeah don't force yourself to like them.... you either will or you won't, but I think it's a grower of an album and a few people I talk to felt underwhelmed on the first couple listens.
