OUT NOW!
Lurker of Chalice “Lurker of Chalice” Double LP
ANTI-GOTH 380
(Description by J. Campbell)
Like Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice is a project conceived of and executed by multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Jef Whitehead, who is generally referred to as Wrest in the context of his music. For nearly 20 years, through his work with Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice, and many other projects, Whitehead has consistently recorded and released music that has unquestionably left permanent scars on the face of the USBM scene. To call Lurker of Chalice a Leviathan side-project would be inaccurate. Though Leviathan is far more prolific and widely known, Wrest’s recordings under the Lurker of Chalice banner are just as earnest and extraordinary. Indeed, to many, the Lurker of Chalice material represents the zenith of Wrest’s vast and superb body of work. The self-titled Lurker of Chalice album, which came out in 2005, was the only widely circulated recording associated with the project, the two previous demos only being released in very limited quantities. The album garnered massive praise before swiftly going out of print, practically ensuring its stature as a cult masterpiece. It would be too simplistic to categorize this album as mere Black Metal because it sweeps so broadly across the musical spectrum; however, even when Wrest strays farthest from Black Metal in a stylistic sense, the sensations and emotions the music conjures are every bit as visceral. Born of true despair, the oppressive weight of anguish looms over the album. A genuine sense of oblivion permeates the atmosphere created by this collection of songs that, taken together, chart a course through the bleakest stations of the soul. Following a comparatively brief introductory track, the album opens with “Piercing Where They Might,” one of two songs on the album that were featured on the “Lurker of Chalice” demo released in 2002. The song begins with what might be the brightest passage on the album, featuring delicate guitar work accentuated by the sounds of birds in the background—this proves to be the first and last glimpse of light the listener will have—before it abruptly shifts, plunging over the blackened horizon into ever more depressive regions. A warped repetitive riff of slow bending notes carries the momentum of the song, causing a temporal distortion as it’s woven into the latticework of a steady blast beat moving four times faster—like the anxious constancy of one’s breath over the percussive fervor of one’s heartbeat. Only one other track, “Granite,” which was also featured on the 2002 demo, can really be described as something like traditional Black Metal, with assertive drums like railroad tracks guiding the movement of the song beneath a canopy of guitars, synthesizers, and ethereal vocals. As the album progresses, its lonely and bruised meanderings persist through stylistic and compositional variations that maintain the album’s allure—from the Funeral Doom aesthetics of “Minions” through the haunting echo chamber of despair evoked by “Paramnesia” to “This Blood Falls as Mortal Part III,” which features a Sylvia Plath spoken word sample amid a melancholy interplay of Eno-esque sustained guitars and synthesizers, to the Neofolk evocations of “Vortex Chalice,” before culminating with the sorrowful ardor of “Fastened to the Five Points.” The album closes unceremoniously, leaving the listener fractured and depleted. At the time of its release, no other album sounded quite like this one, and it’s no exaggeration to say that no comparable release has emerged in the last 12 years since “Lurker of Chalice”; the album truly occupies its own shade along the ever-expanding spectrum of Black Metal. NWN! is honored to present this new edition of “Lurker of Chalice,” which will include the bonus track featured on previous vinyl editions of the album. Additionally, NWN! will be working with Wrest to unearth and remaster some previously unreleased Lurker of Chalice material for future releases.

That Rites of Thy Degringolade flag is pretty cool.
It would have been really wicked to put that Lurker of Chalice poster art on a flag I think too.
Something must of happened to the Sectpig songs... further development into something larger or a complete/partial loss of the music that was prepared, cause it was just two seven inches wasn't it? Something has caused delay there it seems. _________________ Bloodline Ascension Temple : https://soundcloud.com/bloodlineascensiontemple

Saltas “Currents Demo 1″ Demo
ANTI-GOTH 391
(Description by C. Conrad)
Death metal has always been predicated upon the acknowledgement and even celebration of the final outcome of life. While many varieties of the artform have undertaken this task by bludgeoning their subjects with relentless onslaughts of aural violence, the subgenre of doom death is most potent as a reflection of the manner in which most face their ultimate expiration – through a progression of increasing dormancy that is less violent than it is insidious. Conceived in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2017, Saltas embraces this latter formula of obscure, slow death through the restrained minimalism of its music and lyrics. As the fruit of a collaboration between two individuals, C.J. (drums, percussion and vocals) and N.R. (guitar and vocals), Saltas has begun its development from the same lineage as other similar entities in which its members have toiled over the past several years, perhaps most notably in Irkallian Oracle and The Funeral Orchestra. However, this is the first instance in which the two have worked together in the same constellation. Under a shared vision of creating something dark, heavy, and minimal, songs and lyrics were written relatively quickly and the first four songs were recorded under simple conditions. The result is the band’s first demo cassette, “Currents,” which is hereby proudly presented by Nuclear War Now! Productions. This recording is perfectly demonstrative of the goal that Saltas set for itself from the beginning. While all the elements that made Irkallian Oracle and The Funeral Orchestra so captivating are still present, they have been stripped down to their primordial essence, thus eschewing any perceived need to embellish the gravity of the sound with any form of discernable melodic tendencies. The austerity of the band’s approach is emphasized by the choice to rely on less instrumentation than what is typical for the genre. Instead of using both guitar and bass to achieve a fuller spectrum of sound, on this first recording Saltas has opted for a single, down-tuned baritone guitar that rumbles circuitously through each of its voluminous progressions. Accompanying the pulsating, low-end sustain of the guitars are the ominous vocals that irresistibly beckon the listener to succumb to his demise peacefully and without cause for regret. These dual vocals, performed by both members, are sometimes double-tracked and layered and at other times seem to mimic a morbid call and response from beyond the grave, as exemplified in the eleven-minute opening track, “Salt at the Temple Roots.” In the words of the band itself, this first demo represents the genesis of a creation that will take time to mold into its enduring shape. In the meantime, “Currents” will serve temporarily to satiate life’s appetite for death, to be followed later this year by the band’s upcoming second demo, “Parasites.”

Pseudogod “Sepulchral Chants” Double LP
ANTI-GOTH 393
(Description by J. Campbell)
Since 2004, Russian Bestial Black Metal masters Pseudogod have been trudging through the infertile landscape of the underground, malevolent soldiers of apocalyptic ruin. Pseudogod’s output, however, has remained sparse in comparison to the band’s longevity—an effect of the tyrannical control the band has maintained over the quality of its work. Aside from the band’s 2012 full-length, “Deathwomb Catechesis,” Pseudogod has released just one demo, along with a handful of EPs, split releases, and comp tracks. The “Sepulchral Chants” compilation, originally released as a CD, in 2015, by Sekt Ov Gnozis Productions, collects all of Pseudogod’s non-album tracks. Presented in nearly chronological order, these tracks trace the steps of Pseudogod’s development, beginning with the wretched and relentless violence of the “Illusion of Salvation” demo. First released in 2006, “Illusion of Salvation” was Pseudogod’s first blasphemous proclamation. As a first release, it was virtually unparalleled among the band’s peers in the Black/Death style, and it set a high bar for Pseudogod to live up to for future releases. But any doubt that Pseudogod would be unable to surpass the demo was quickly dispelled with the 2009 split release with Blaze of Perdition. Pseudogod’s three tracks on that release (which were later released on the “Triumphus Serpentis Magni” MLP), represented a substantial step forward, and a deeper descent into the dimmest regions of the soul. Mixed and mastered by M. Żentara (MGLA), the sound is full, but severe, demonstrating the band’s stunning balance of sonic severity and precision songwriting. Pseudogod clearly possessed something that their contemporaries at the time sorely lacked; they created atmosphere but without sacrificing the melody and structure necessary for good, memorable songs. The band continued to refine this approach over the next few years on the Russian “Four Wings of Blasphemy” four-way split CD and the split 12” with Morbosidad. As it evolved, Pseudogod’s music became more immense, exhibiting a rarefied understanding of, and an unyielding devotion to, the malefic forces underlying Black Metal. This collection—released on vinyl for the first time—includes all of the tracks Pseudogod released prior to the recording of the debut album (as well as a few previously unreleased rehearsal tracks). It is a remarkably consistent body of work and remains one of the best representations of this style produced in the last 20 years.
