OUT NOW!

Dreadful Relic “Hyborian Sorcery” LP
ANTI-GOTH 367

(Description by J. Campbell)
Following closely behind the release of the “Combat Alchemist” 7” comes the first full-length LP by Greece’s Dreadful Relic. Entitled “Hyborian Sorcery”—a reference to the mythical age created by the great Robert E. Howard—the album features the band’s self-described Black Mythical Metal in its fully realized form. First Wave Black Metal is the scaffolding the band uses to construct its sound, but in both atmosphere and concept, this album represents more than mere imitation; it signifies a violent rejection of the vacuous and corrupt contemporary world. The most obvious sonic reference point for Dreadful Relic is HELLHAMMER and other progenitors of the Black Metal genre, such as SAMAEL and TREBLINKA—all three of which have been covered on the band’s previous releases. But Dreadful Relic eschew mimicry, instead assembling these building blocks in a manner that is novel and captivating. The skillful songwriting featured on “Hyborian Sorcery” ensures that the album never falters, with each track striking a unique nerve. Intrinsic to Dreadful Relic’s approach is the thematic content of the songs. Commingling a variety of mythical, fantastical, and historical ideas and images, the lyrical content and the conceptual underpinnings of the band are an essential aspect of Dreadful Relic’s alchemy. Casting a gaze toward the ancient world in which gods traversed the same landscapes as their human counterparts—before the corrosive presence of monotheism reduced man to pathetic subordination and groveling to his narcissistic god—Dreadful Relic embody a sense of psychic and spiritual warfare: the ancient spirit grappling with the curse of modern existence. As such, these songs are barbarian battle hymns and berserkers’ anthems, prideful calls to arms and stoic displays of might. There is a juxtaposition between the visceral and the transcendent in Dreadful Relic’s music. Listening to “Hyborian Sorcery,” one hears boots on the ground guided by a celestial consciousness. Atavistic and tribal, Dreadful Relic’s sound invokes the ritual purity of blood-bound oaths and the anguished whispers of ancestral voices. Complementing the music on this album is the magnificent cover art by Thomas Holm, known for his classic work with Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, and Nifelheim, among others. NWN! is honored to present the vinyl version of this superb album, which will also be released on CD and tape by Frost & Fire Records.

Regular Version: Black vinyl LP, jacket, 12"x12", A2 poster.

That sample track for the upcoming Rites of Thy Degringolade is pretty good. Looking forward to this release.

The rest of the album is just as great!

That's really good to hear and know... not that I expected less from them, alas looking very forward to this, so my next question is when do you believe the album will be released? March or sooner... later? Thanks man.

Yes, new TS is in the works and will be available around the time of the CD or LP release. I think the CD will come back first since LP test press just came back today and CD has been in production for several weeks. The band will have copies with them on their upcoming European tour with Profanatica.

COMING SOON!

Rites of Thy Degringolade “The Blade Philosophical” LP/CD
ANTI-GOTH 362

Anyone familiar with the history of extreme metal in Canada must acknowledge the importance of Edmonton veterans Rites of Thy Degringolade. Originally conceived in 1997 as a solo project by Paulus Kressman, known at that time for his phenomenal drumming and vocals for Sacramentary Abolishment (who would evolve into Axis of Advance following Kressman’s departure), the earliest Rites recordings were solitary, experimental endeavors. The self-titled 1999 demo and the debut album, “The Carytid,” from 2000, feature Kressman handling all instrumentation. With the inclusion of guitarist J. Wroth in 2001, Rites became more powerful and precise. Over the next several years, the duo recorded and released the legendary “Totality” album, the follow up “Totality’s Kommand” EP, and the split with Portal, entitled “Our Dreadful Sphere.” Kressman and Wroth then recruited Malevolus (Godless North, Gloria Dioboli) for the recording of the third album, “An Ode to Sin,” which the band elected to release on NWN! just as the label was beginning to establish its own prominence in the underground. That lineup wouldn’t last, however, and by 2006, the band was dormant, with Kressman focusing on other projects for the next decade, including Warmarch, Weapon, and Gloria Diaboli among others. It was, therefore, an unexpected and welcome development when, in 2015, Kressman and Wroth reunited to resurrect Rites of Thy Degringolade, along with new members, guitarist N.K.L.H. (Antediluvian, Weapon, Amphisbaena) and bassist C.W. to perform at the Covenant Fest in Vancouver. The band persisted and with this lineup—the fullest in the band’s history—Rites set about recording their first album in 13 years. “The Blade Philosophical” is at once a recapitulation of the band’s earlier work and a continued expansion of the boundaries of extreme metal. It is, in the truest sense, a real album, with common sonic and thematic threads woven throughout, drawing the tracks together into something cohesive and whole. Conceptually, the album is an exposition of the themes that permeate the band’s entire body of work. While many details of the philosophy of Rites remain obscure, the overarching premise emerges: the exaltation of the self—the cultivation of the individual will—to disrupt, navigate, and ultimately control the ever-flowing streams of determinism. “The Blade Philosophical,” Kressman elaborates, “is the study and catharsis in the constant state of will—deterministic all, and the self as creator and destroyer.” The sound of Rites has always been distinctive—the band is one of a handful that can be honestly characterized as unique. On this album, the full spectrum of the band’s sound is on violent display. Kressman’s frenetic percussion and the low-end guitars form a tangled and tense knot at the core, that is draped and gilded with shimmering contrapuntal melodies delivered by Wroth and N.K.L.H. The organic fibers of Rites’ sound remain in omnipresent tension with the grinding mechanistic and boldly physical elements. The sprawling universe suspended in death-black paralysis. The misshapen spine of the cosmos dissected in the mind of man. “The Blade Philosophical” is a controlled descent into the orgiastic field of rape and disorder called the world and the corresponding ascendency of the individual from within. The release of “The Blade Philosophical” signifies more than just the band’s return to recording; Rites is currently preparing to embark on its first major-scale European tour (24 dates), and will be playing various fests in 2018 and beyond. NWN! is supremely honored to present this monumental return to form by one of the greatest bands of the last several decades.

Professor Black & Gezol “Tarantula” 7″
ANTI-GOTH 373

(Description by C. Conrad)
Nuclear War Now! is proud to announce the release of the “Tarantula” seven-inch single, a collaboration between Chris “Professor” Black and Gezol, two highly-respected and venerable musicians in the metal underground. Originally envisioned to be one installment in a series of singles and later reimagined to become a single track on a Professor Black solo album featuring several different vocalists, the impetus for this pairing dates back many years. Gezol had already been considered a musical hero to the Professor when the two first shared a stage in 2003, with the former playing in Metalucifer and Sabbat and the latter in Superchrist for the Japanese legends’ first U.S. shows. Gezol and the Professor kept in touch over the years since and were later reunited on stage in 2014 when Professor Black played session bass for two gigs with Metalucifer. Given his admiration for Gezol’s body of work, the Professor then naturally decided to ask Gezol to record a song for the aforementioned solo album. Gezol accepted the offer and was the first of the invited vocalists to submit his contribution.
Although the idea for the solo album was never fully realized, this collaboration between Professor Black and Gezol merits its release as a standalone seven-inch single. “Tarantula” was written specifically for Gezol’s vocals, which he delivers in both English and Japanese as two versions of the song, each on its own side. Professor Black had written the music and English lyrics and recorded the instruments himself during the same studio session as the High Spirits “Motivator” album. In addition to the vocal performances, Gezol spawned the idea for the Japanese version and wrote those lyrics. Whereas the vocal tracks serve as the only technical difference between the two versions, the Japanese rendition distinguishes itself from the English version in its increased level of aggression and a resulting difference in atmosphere. Both versions, however, are equally potent exemplars of speed metal and pair perfectly for release in this particular format. The cover art was provided by damhair, whose style is recognizable from its regular appearance in Isten zine between the 1990s and the present. The end result of this collaboration is one that represents and celebrates the dedication to their craft that both Professor Black and Gezol have demonstrated through their collective bodies of work over the past twenty-plus years.

Available in limited white marble and regular black vinyl.

Do you know if they plan to do CDs? Would really like to grab a few of their earlier albums.
