I feel like "back in the day" that GZ used to do actual short run LP covers, because they're set up on a digital press so who cares if it's just 100? The places who require the full runs are mostly offset printing, which requires a lot more set up time and that's why they set the minimums of 500. But for a digital press it wouldn't seem like it's much different than getting something printed at Kinkos on a color printer, just a bit bigger and on different stock. I could be wrong but that's my theory anyway....

GZ is not digital printing as in digital color printing at Kinkos. They do digital to plates which is still a form of offset printing. Someone more versed in the printing industry can tell you more about it. Kramer probably knows more about this.

GZ's short runs are the same as printing the min and dumping a bunch of jackets. I asked about this exact topic when I did 6 different lim to 100 pic LPs for NWN Fest 3. They told me it made no sense to do 100 jackets because they would still charge me the min. I ended up doing a generic jacket that went with all 600 pic LPs.

Well, this page kind of makes it sound like digital printing is just that, and there are no such things as plates in digital printing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_printing

And I'm not sure what they use for their LP printing as I couldn't find that specified, but from what this says it sounds like they're all (or at least mostly) digital in the print dept:

http://gzmedia.eu/Print-and-Packaging/Technology/Printing.aspx

Clearly when they make the 'prints' for their picture disc guts they are using digital, because you can order 100 copies of a picture disc. So that means they do use digital printing for some stuff at least, and possibly their LP covers could be the same?

Again, I could be wrong, but this is kind of how I understand it.

This guy can do a 2 or 4 color process apparently:

http://www.econopressprinting.com/

You can get 100 12"x12" sheets for the cover and another 100 for the back and you'll probably end up wayyyy cheaper than any of the alternatives

It seems like the author of the Wiki article may be thinking of Desktop Publishing VS digital production printing which, at least back in 2000 still used plates of a sort. When Battle Helm Magazine was still being printed we used Morgan Printing in ND who did "Computer to plate" printing which still made an offset printing plate of some kind but far cheaper by eliminating the film work associated with plate making cutting out a huge portion of the setup fees reducing the print bill for each issue by at least 1/3.

I use Print Keg http://www.printkeg.com/ for most printed materials: promo sheets, 11 x 17 fliers (A3 posters), 4 x 6 postcard fliers, etc. They are "digital offset prints" and have a nice heavy weight, aqueous semi-gloss coating like you expect on standard coated printed materials. You can get turn around in about a week or so at cheap prices which of course get cheaper the more you do.

Forget Kegs large size prints too fucking high. If you wanna do huge posters and shit Conquest has good prices on full color 18 x 24 (A2 poster) and up: http://www.conquestgraphics.com/Products/Poster-Printing-Services Conquest even has a thing where the customer can request they do a job for them at "X" price with no rush and they will consider if they can do it for that. Probably you could get some pretty sweet deals if you catch them on a low period.

Now for the off topic:
I have used A to Z for all Metal Hell CD releases and have been very pleased with both speed and customer service from Joe & Rob. Each project I do with them has also been getting fractionally cheaper despite packaging staying the same quality / level. Many thanks to Yosuke for giving me the lead on them.

I can't speak to Mobineko's quality but Pizza Party Printing might be able to help you out. They did the jackets for the Marrow/Machetazo split and a few others I think. http://pizzapartyprinting.com/store/. Messaging the guy on facebook might be your best bet https://www.facebook.com/pizzapartyprinting

Are these silkscreened?

Very cool, this guy does stuff wayyyyy cheap! I think I remember him from seeing ads in MRR back in the day. And yes, paste on sleeves are an old school way to do small runs. Thanks for the info, I'm definitely going to write this guy!

And regarding the digital printing thing, I'm just getting more confused.... So I read up some more and again, I thing digital and offset are two totally different things. Everything I read says there's no plates in digital, but maybe there are some processes that combine the two? I don't know, but when I googled 'digital offset printing' this is what came up:

Thanks again for that Econopress tip, I've been emailing with him today so will probably be doing something through him. His prices are so cheap, got a quote that 100 two sided b/w LP inserts would be just $50 postpaid.

And he'll do 500 covers for 7"s for just $100!?!? Good deals!

Can't go wrong with him. I've used him for several projects to date and for a 1 man operation the level of customer service is superb and the quality of the prints always meet standards. I got 300 7" folders on thick black stock with silver ink printed on it for $148 shipped.

Very cool! He must be doing something right, he's been doing it for 20+ years it says! And I love to support small businesses like that too, and especially when they're stateside! Thanks again for the tip, and I hope some other folks see this and take note of this as a printing option!! I already told a couple friends who have labels about him today!

I second the Econopress recommendation. Markley is really easy to deal with, does a killer job, and is fast as hell.

I got a quote from this place today, and though I'm asking about black/white sleeves I'm sure it's not much more for color. I probably won't use them because after the currency conversion and all it will be close to what I could get 500 done for in the US and I could just use the extras for mailer fillers or something for shipping! But for those in Europe it's not a bad deal, I mean you could have actual printed covers done for 2.60euro each in a quantity as low as 100, that's not bad.

http://www.audio.cd/

"price for 350g heavy cartonsleeves with spine in b/w is 260 euro + shipping to US 69 euro."

If you can live with it that they fuck up the colours completely Mobineko is the right choice.

My newest release, LP in a jacket just arrived from Mobineko and the colors are best ever, they never fucked up any cover colors of my releases. One time they sent all green vinyl when I ordered all black (I paid for black, so I settled for it as a little bonus, haha). They said they´re about to use different plant for vinyl in future, no Direct Metal Mastering to be available then...

With colors there´s nowadays a big possibility to screw it with newer Photoshop editions, with tons of different selections of CMYK colors. I Still save the final version with old Photoshop with one CMYK/TIF option and it always comes out the way it was meant to be. Anyone with experiences of this or some sort of computer knowledge?
