I am well acquainted with Hordanes Land and was mildly interested in Vikingligr veldi around the time of it's release, but that is pretty much as far as my knowledge of Enslaved goes. I reckon people generally consider Frost to be their opus magnum?

Frost is my favorite with Eld being at a close second. I have a soft spot for Blodhemn... it's an all out savage album. I recall Mardraum having some killer tracks... Below the Lights was a nice comeback from Monumension.

Voted for Frost but to me are all great up to Eld.

interesting how we all perceive the same band(s) so differently

I have been a big fan of Enslaved since Eld came out

for me my favourite is "viking..." but Hordanes land is up there too.

Eld starts out well but I tend to lose interest as the album goes on
fenris was the only song on Frost the grabbed me
Blodheim I could never get into
below the lights was a very good album: quite progressive

I got into Frost like no other Enslaved album. Perfect riffs, atmosphere etc. Hell I think I'm even going to listen to it again today.

793 Slaget Om Lindisfarne is one of my favourite tracks of all time though.

The progressive era is highly overrated. The first 3 are great through.

Somewhat how I feel, I don't think it's the only good one but it's the only one I really listen to (when I actually listen to Enslaved).

yeah I think you are right there

I have got all of Enslaved albums and yes sure they are great musicians and the lyrics are cool but once enslaved got their first few ground breaking releases out of the way (everyting up to and inc eld) they then chose to take a very safe path from there on

sure it was progressive for a BM/Viking metal band to go the way they did but it wasn't that ground breaking in the grand scheme of things.

all Enslaved were doing with their proggy releases was "re-inventing the wheel" as they were merely adding elements to their music already covered by other bands for decades ie led zep etc

where as with early stuff like "viking" Enslaved were definitely plowing their own furrow.

Enslaved probably have been a commercial success for the band members but the likes of Varg will always be truly more interesting in my books

I'm thinking HL over VV at the moment, but both are genius. Also, Isa deserves to be on this list. (Yeah, I know there's little love on this forum for progressive metal...)

About the later stuff: I prefer what I call their "experimental" (not when they later became stagnant prog rock which is hardly progressive) era: Blodhemn - Mardraum - Monumension. Vertebrae is still one hell of an album...

Hard to pick a fave, it could be anything from Vikingligr Veldi to Eld to the later stuff.
