Looking for some inspiration apart from the usual lyrics/credits/band pic that compliment the outer and add another dimension to the presentation.

Why not instead look again at the themes of the music to inspire some visual ideas?

Ideally, don't even start the outer cover design until a concept is decided for the whole package, inside and out. Then the inner sleeve doesn't risk being an inferior afterthought. A good overall concept might even make you wish you had more space to fill.

Or if the outer cover already nails the visual presentation of the release, save yourself a load of money and go for simple poly-lined (anti-static) inners.

If you do go with printed inners, I strongly advise that you also order some cheap plain paper inners as well, and ask the pressing plant to pack all the vinyls in those and leave the printed inners empty. It's such a waste to spend all that money on printed inners and then a load of them get damaged by seam splits. That can happen while they're in transit from the plant to you, from you to your distributors, and from you or your distributors to the end customer. So there's a good chance that many people will end up with damaged printed inners. They're made of thinner material than outer covers, so are more likely to get seam splits.

Do not do a printed sleeve. Go for an insert or booklet. Printed inner sleeves are garbage that the record just tears through. Try holographic work or watermarks that only show through when held up to light.

i used to love the old early nineties /late eighties collages on inner sleeves .

i wouldnt recommend them now because no one smiles now in their band pic dont get me wrong but a lot of evil/grim/sad cunt s in a collage is not going to work.

was always cool to look through them though

I would say that a good 3/4 of all the printed inner sleeves I've encountered have splits on at least one side. Good in theory, bad in practice.

I originally wrote this just wanting to see some cool inner designs as I'm not even in the market for pressing vinool. However, now I am definitely never considering doing them for the reasons and explanations given and probably not worth justifying the already high price of vinyl.

We have done several printed inners and pay the additional .25 to get the records placed in a standard sleeve to avoid the splits. You can put it in the inner on your own.

Also, we recently did a run of printed inners on thick stock displaying upcoming releases ala the 80s Noise lps and others. They are with the Goreaphobia and Invincible Force lps.
