Masterpieces through and through.

Supreme, top notch black metal. They don't make albums of this caliber these days..

I saw them once live and Sarcana definitely looked much better in reality than in the booklets. Exclamation

uh, second spell is perfect, raw yet symphonic with their own sound.

Took me so many years but I finally got full on into First Spell (+ Black Seared Heart), just perfect... right there with early Carpathian Forest and Ancient for similar moods.

Still not into Seen Through... and Malice though. Top stuff from there onwards, especially Adimiron Black and WW.

Kind of strafed around Gehenna in the later 90s for the first time but wasn't somehow ripe for it, even if Norwegian bands were pretty much the only thing I had in my mind then.

First Spell has a neat charm, but Seen Through The Veils Of Darkness took a bit longer. Of all things it was the synth sound that bothered me. HOO! HAA! OHOO! Eventually I was able to appreciate that album.

I still don't have Malice. Sometimes I think I should get it just to close such an obvious gap. I don't have a lot of those when it comes to Norwegian black metal.

A bit similar in my case, they were always my least favourite of the well-known 2nd wave Norwegian bands. I like Malice the most but I hardly listen to it more than just once/twice a year. Not a bad band by any stretch, but they just don't sound as unique to me as Emperor, Ulver, Mysticum, etc.

great album with that nice second wave NBM charme.
Listened to it lately and proved my feelings right that it couldn't keep up with f.e. Isvind's DWS that came up also in this period of time. well done, great and all, but not "on top".

I like Isvind (especially the Nivelheimen demo which was far better than the blastfest that is DWS in my opinion) but they were pretty unoriginal even at that time.

maybe, but this album is for me on par with the norwegian classics 1994 and pre. I cannot describe, as one always cannot when it comes to the feelings about music, but DSW has something magical, reeking of old, yet stellar, ... don't know. this feeling about DWS doesn't leave me since I listened to it first when it came out. unoriginal? yes, totally. But brilliant, and connecting the past and the future of norse BM.

I understand, I have some personal favourites like that too... For example I think that the first two songs on Ancient - Trolltaar have something very unique in them while a lot of people would disagree. And I can't explain it rationally, it's just a strong feeling I get from the strange, almost peaceful (which is weird in a BM context) atmosphere in those tunes.

yeah, that's it, mate! Wink

btw if anyone likes the first spell of gehenna one should give Liturgia (Fin) - 7" a spin! pure second wave CALM norwegian BM tribute!

WW is so damn good. Grenade Prayer in particular is one of the most vicious tracks I've got on hand.

First Spell rules supreme. A true gem of norwegian black metal.
