I'm well versed in the second wave scenes that popped up all across Eurpope (France, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, et al) but was there anything going on in Ireland in the mid-90s? I know that Primordial was around pretty early on, but what else? What are the essential Irish BM demos, LPs etc?

I'm well aware you can search by country on Metal Archives, but this yields lots of results and not much in the way to filter them.

Thanks

Nothing much of value was going on in Ireland in the nineties but there are a few gems that are worth mentioning.

The Geasa 'Starside' demo from 96 is a classic and really managed to capture an interesting aura.

The Cruachan demo is good too. Neither band really followed up on their potential I don't think.

Arcane Sun's self titled debut album that came out in 99/00 is brilliant and combines black, death, doom with a heavy gothic touch. They were active during the nineties under the name The Fifth Dominion but whatever I have heard from that incarnation didn't sound great.

There was a band called Moonfog knocking around at the end of the nineties, early 00s but they were generic shite and didn't manage anything beyond an inconsequential demo.

Cacodemon started up then too and a couple of its members went on to form Sol Axis, Myrkr, Slidhr and most recently Naddred..

Rebirth of Nefast are currently top of the list along with Slidhr.

Nothing much else springs to mind from here in terms of black metal. There are a few promising band working here lately but none that hit the same heights as those mentioned for me.

BM wasn't as popular there or why is it exactly? The population of Ireland isn't really that small..

I'm not sure. The scene would have been big enough in the nineties and there were always bands on the go, like there are a couple of top class doom bands who started in the early/mid nineties, namely Mourning Beloveth and Graveyard Dirt. Some cool death metal too like Abaddon Incarnate and Asphyxia/Morphosis. The scene here has never really favored one particular style above another apart from the usual glut of brutal death metal stuff that always feels to me to be entry level stuff and not worth mentioning.

Even now, there are actually a decent amount of bands who are doing interesting things but there isn't one style that everyone operates within. There's a busy enough doom/sludge scene I suppose and a small but exciting (to me) death metal scene with my own band (Malthusian), Vircolac, Coscradh, Apostate Viaticum and Zealot Cult. But even then, none of those bands are much alike. I think because the scene here is so small these days its hard to find people into the same stuff as you so it's unlikely you'll get four dudes who want to play Blasphemy style stuff so things end up getting a bit more mixed up sounding.

Early Abaddon Incarnate is indeed killer.

I recently got that Zealot Cult Karmenian Crypt MLP and it is really good. One of the more underrated death metal releases this year. In September Bandcamp did an article about the underground scene in Ireland. Link Below.

Karmenian Crypt is fucking great. The new stuff I've heard sounds as good, maybe better. Full length is coming early next year on Blood Harvest.

Thanks so much @kill monument!!

Listening to Geasa "Starside" now, this is basically exactly what I was hoping to find. A really beautiful demo indeed!! Needless to say I'm hooked. Looking forward to working my way through the rest of the stuff you posted, and anything else that might surface here.

Any thoughts on the newer crop of bands? Sol Axis, Myrkr, Cacodemon as you mentioned et al? where to start?

I remember there was some stuff by this project called Fuil Na Seanchoille a few years back. I remember Tour De Garde advertising it as "irish bm" though I'm not sure the guy actually lived in Ireland? Doesn't really matter I guess, I liked those demos when they came out.

Cacodemon, Sol Axis and Myrkr were bands that Joseph Deegan was behind. He now masterminds Slidhr and Naddred. All of it is worth a listen but Slidhr is I think where he has truly come into his own.

Rebirth of Nefast released a monumental album earlier this year through Norma Evangelium Diaboli, which is essential, as is their 2008 split with Slidhr. And their demo!

Deegan and Steve Lockhart- who is the brains behind Rebirth- also did a great collaboration on a project called Haud Mundus a few years back. They have a split with Wormlust.

How could I forget Fuil na Seanchoille! Cormy is from Ireland but has lived in Australia for several years. His album, Hunger, is great and is getting a vinyl release soon through Me Saco Un Ojo. There is a new recording in the works too, at long last.

Check out Altus Astrum actually. They were from Northern Ireland and released a strong album a few years ago on the Chinese label, Pest Productions.

I liked the GROUND OF RUIN -Cloaked In Doctrine ep (2008).

Haven't listened to their previous stuff but that was pretty promising.

I forgot they even existed! I would put them in the bracket of a band who showed promise but dissolved before developing into something particularly evolved or interesting.
