The other thread from a few years ago got locked so I thought I would open up discussion again and see if anyone can recommended me some good classical (modern or past) compositions that are reminiscent of metal. The compositions can be fast or slow, busy or atmospheric, whatever. So long as they're at least dark and/or triumphant.

I know about Shostakovich and Grieg and Part, but I won't be upset if someone links to those guys anyway.

What ya got?

Gleaned this killer Shostakovich from the locked thread. Sans percussion yet still heavy.

I heard that Arghoslent was just Chinese opera music from a reliable source, so definitely whatever the Beijing Symphony Orchestra is playing.

Philip Glass's Intro on Glassworks definitely has that right vibe of melancholy.

in the second youtube clip it gets very brutal.

Mahler. Criminally underrated. Listen to his 6th symphony. Totally triumphant. The version I have is so long, it fits on 2 CDs

Thanks to God Slayer and Klown. Working toward the other suggestions.

Really dig the Liszt.
