I really don't know this subgenre quite well but lately I've been checking a couple of bands and really liking it.

Some of the bands I've been listening to are:

Worship (Last Tape Before Doomsday)
Mournful Congregation (Weeping)
Thergothon (Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sothoth)
Stabat Mater (same)

Can you recommend both classics and new bands?

Defunct Danish band, I recently got hold of af deadstock of the debut album from 2006 to sell at the Deadbangers shop - I was amazed how cool this is.

ASUNDER - A Clarion Call is probably the best

Evoken and Esoteric are classic bands.

Also Disembowelment. They are more death metal influenced, but they were a huge influence on the whole funeral doom genre.

From the newer bands I really like Lycus.

The new Loss record is so good!

Would also add Bell Witch to the list.

Other'n the ones already mentioned, check out Skepticism, Wijlen Wij, and Funeral, for sure. Early Ahab is really fucking good, too. I also really like Descend Into Despair. They're more melodic, but they really hit the spot when you're in the mood for some maudlin slow-time brutality.

When done right, this style can be amazing, but I find most of it to be boring and overlong. Here are a few bands that do it right:

Shape of Despair
Black Wreath
Faal
Urna
Longing for Dawn

Skepticism
Shape of despair
Nortt ( Black funeral doom?)
Unholy ( maybe not..pure)
Funeral
Funeral Moth
Tyranny

The demo-tape by Temple of Abandonment-"From outer spheres..death"
from last year, is well worth a listen. Good funeral/death/Doom in the vein of Mournful Congregation and Asunder

Seconding: The first Ahab, Esoteric, Asunder and Loss

Still need to hear the latest Loss actually.
