A chance to pay tribute to the best black/death drumming - not technical, hyper-speed or whatever, but the drummers whose expressive performances add so much to the recording. It isn't necessarily about the sound or production, but simply the feeling.
Here are some ideas:
Fenriz - "Soulside Journey"
Nicke Andersson - "Clandestine"
Craig Smilowski - "Dawn of Possession"
Cazz Grant - "Castrate the Redeemer"
Chris Reifert - "Mental Funeral"
more recently:
Jim Roe - "Mortal Repulsion"
Dani Molestor - last Adorior & Grave Miasma _________________ http://thykindreddreamers.blogspot.co.uk/ |

Mike Sus on "Seven Churches." Really different drumming for death/thrash and out of all the bands that must have been influenced by Possessed, very few actually felt the same way; I think the drumming is a big part of that. _________________

Not sure if this is what you mean, but I've always thought the drumming on Through Silver and Blood by Neurosis had a lot of feeling to it. So did Enemy of the Sun and Times at Grace, but Through Silver.. is the album I think of first. _________________ Good sellers/traders: metalmac, greenmonster, Transcendence, GoldenBull, Paria

I should think for a while about this because I know plenty of good examples, but for black metal, check out Zathanel on Setherial's Nord. Far from just blasting, instead constantly in motion, everchanging, full of little nuances here and there. And the sound, the fills... is it cold in here? _________________ §:-Ğl |

Really? For my ears it sounds that Lombardo tries too hard, especially some double bass things are out of his league at early records.
Nicke on Clandestine gets my vote too. Those drummings are se genious and full of feeling. _________________ Mors fennico more |

Soulsiide Journey Id agree with.
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines will always be a standout in my mind.
Soulful in metal can be up to interpretation, so not just speaking of technical/speed OMG 300bpm! And Ive never liked the current guy in Nile.
Negura Bunget's N' Crugu and Om have some unique drumming I like a lot.
Cobalt's Eater and Gin.
Malevolent Creation's Will to Kill. Same guy that played on Suffocation's Despise the Sun.
Dawn's Slaughtersun has always floored me. That sound too. Perfection.
Arghoslent's Hornets in quite impressive. Hope they keep that guy for whenever the next recording shows up.
Revenge - Anything. I always J Read's sloppy gogogo technique.
Im kinda drunk so i hope this post is relevent to the OP. Took me a minute to thinka these. |
