I love it all. The older I get , the more I appreciate actual songs instead of just violent noise. Still like the crazy shit of course, though !
The summer months especially make me listen to traditional/NWOBHM/classic doom almost exclusively. Darkthrone and old Immortal don't go too well with 90 degrees and high humidity !
Edit: I cannot stand stoner/drone shit at all, even while stoned. |

Funeral and Death Doom are 2 of my favourite sounds and most preferred styles of doom...Thergothon, Skepticism, Unholy, Katatonia, October Tide...some of my most favourite bands of any genre. Also like Candlemass (an old favourite), occasional "sludge" stuff (Grief springs to mind)....was super into Sunn O))) and the like for a while, now rarely ever listen to it apart from Khanate who I have always thought were brilliant especially the s/t and Capture & Release.
I like some of the St. Vitus, Sleep and a handful of Electric Wizard tracks but find them in particular to be overrated whereas I think Vitus and Sleep are really quite good. First Cathedral album is a total classic too.
"Stoner Doom" is a complete bullshit label, I don't care how many pot references and swirly 60s fonts and "grooveeh" riffs, Thergothon for example (or, fucking *anything*) is way more effective "stoner" music and doesn't parade around with that tag on its sleeve like some kind of gimmick. |

I think anyone into Metal or Punk should know and respect the roots, but you can't expect them to actually like them, that is forced "scene rules" bullshit. |
Totally agree. Some may just prefer dark music and therefore not gain any enjoyment from listening to NWOBHM, etc. Knowing your roots is beneficial but not always relevant for some.
Personally, I grew up with classic Heavy Metal in the early 80s but never listen to it at all other than the odd bit of Priest, Manowar or Dio and that's normally only when I'm hanging out and drinking with a friend. My preference is for heavy, kaotik and dark music and neither Doom or NWOBHM do this for me other than the 2nd Electric Wizard, Winter and the first Cathedral. Both styles bore me and lack the intensity I can get from listening to Beherit or Possessed. _________________

I like metal.
If you look hard enough, you will uncover gems in nearly every sub-genre of metal. I don't really have an overall preference to one niche or the other, it just depends on what I'm feeling that day, and I can listen to most stuff anytime as long as it's good to me.
That said, I tend to dislike a lot of "classic" albums for whatever reason, so a lot of the time, what is good to me, is not always the most obvious or even the "best" in the sub-genre. No accounting for taste I guess.
Here's a list of my 25 favorite heavy/speed/power metal albums:

Doom metal is one of my favorite genres.
Black Sabbath are the Α and the Ω.
I prefer heavy/slow/rotting doom metal in the vein of Electric Wizard and Reverend Bizarre.
I don't like the epic doom like solitude aeternus.I don't like the ''good'' or operatic voices in doom metal.Or progressive or power doom.To hell!
Doom must be simple minimal, dark and full of riffs, like the fathers Trouble,Witchfinder General,Saint Vitus and Pentagram. |

I like some Doom ala Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass, and St. Vitus but I'm more into Death/Doom and what few Black/Doom bands there are. NWOBHM I haven't really paid any attention to outside of the bands tied in to BM like Venom and Mercyful Fate. _________________

As far as current music, I basically only pay attention to death/black and doom. The stuff I will love forever is late 60's/early 70's blues/psyche (proto-doom if you will). For example: Truth & Janey (my avatar), Black Cat Bones, Leaf Hound, Free, Bloodrock, Crow, etc. Those English boys knew how to copy American blues pretty well with their own twist.
