"Recluse" - one who prefers the company of themselves, seldom bothering to enter the murky world of strangers. Looking at the song titles, it's probably for the best. Not content with being un-PC and straight to the point, Recluse brings black metal back to the halycon days of the early 90's, weaving disgusting concepts into a tapestry of pure hatred and vitriol. This is how it was always supposed to be. If the blatant attack on Jesus isn't suggestive enough from the album title, Recluse is joined on this record by Wlad (he of Vlad Tepes and LLN fame), who has secured a place as the permanent vocalist of Recluse.

It's not every day one of the most famous musicians in the extreme underworld of metal handpicks a band the other side of the world to fill his resume - but Recluse isn't just any band.

Highly anticipated. What little I have been able to listen to has been harrowing in the best way possible.

This is absolutely great, way more to my liking then Cobalt. Wlad's vocals fit in well also, as expected. Riffing is weird in a good way. Hoping now that he's doing work again that there will be Vèrmibdrèb and Vzaéurvbtre releases eventually too..

This album was pretty personal for Phil and around the time he needed all the materials etc in from me, I was in the studio with Loss. We are not on bad terms and this has always been his project. I was kind of a session member. He wrote everything on all previous material and I just played bass.
This new one is superb and by far the best thing he's done in my opinion though I love the stuff I played on too.I was pretty bummed not being able to work with DTB as well, seeing as Absurd is one of my top 5 bands and the relation to JFN etc.

Here's a recent interview for Zero tolerance to explain things as well as i care to....

NTB":Still Birth in Bethlehem" seems like a new start or chapter for
Recluse, or at least seems to be coming a different-yet-related place. I
know you've had some rough times in your personal life the past couple
years, and it's not really my place to probe that here, but what
inspired this sonic/spiritual shift toward something blearier and more
ameciated despite its concertedly uglier contours? The first demo and
album maintained a more hateful-yet-triumphant aspect.

MCS: Sometimes you can get so deep into thought that it can be like dreaming while awake. I let that happen and recorded it instrumentality sometimes on the first take. I wanted it to be a primal experience with a very ugly resonance. That means that occasionally i played less accurately but the essence was greater instead of re recording tracks. Improvisation is definitely not what I'd consider any of it. It was later refined with a very narrow comb. I really don't care if someone prefers the older material more because I made this album to harm people, not make them feel pleased.

NTB: So, sickness of the mind/spirit: where's the line drawn between
motivating madness and debilitating malady? In terms of nowadays black
metal, are its practitioners a bit too, well, "normal" and well-adjusted
and not sufficiently SICK?

MCS: I completely am disgusted by bands that use black metal art as a hobby. These bands play a bunch of shows, like to party in St vitus and are afraid to go really drop into the bottom of this philosophy. I am a sick man. I have plenty of mental issues that i believe are channeled into something i care about very much, which is my music. If true bitterness and worship is not the goal for them, it's because these individuals don't have anything deep and meaningful to contribute. These people bring bullshit politics into our world, they need to find the exit. Many leeches will say I'm arrogant. I agree with them, meekness is a pussy Christian value.

NTB: Still, why do so many listeners demand that an artist suffers for his
art? Is this, by proxy, a vicarious sickness in itself?

MCS: This album delves very deep into true hate and anger in a way due to its unhinged nature. Occasionally it takes a form that insults a certain group of people or another, but the album is completely not political. If the leftist wimps who pass as certain journalists want to concern themselves with trying to object, i will not respond. You can't control something so deep in your darkest hate, what you are insulted by is in my living DNA. If the listener wants to see his artist suffer, he should be listening to my music.

NTB: Which is all to say that Recluse in general and "Still Birth in
Bethlehem" hearken back to an older, very specific time in black metal
when the division between "black metal" and BLACK METAL became stark and
stratifying. Specifically, I mean the days of the Black Legions and
other ancillary French hordes like Funeral/Kristallnacht, Osculum
Infame, Seigneur Voland, Blessed in Sin, and Chemin de Haine among
others: a time when BM had supposedly peaked with the early '90s
Scandinavian wave, and yet the underground in less "cool" countries was
gestating and birthing new strains of virulence. Is that era forever
lost?

MCS: Yes, all that remains are scattered hermits of the devil. The pussies and losers making gay music mean nothing.

NTB: Or, in this Social Media Era, for every reaction there is a
counter-reaction, thus engendering a strive for sicker, more-underground
expressions of BM?

MCS:The true ones never apologize. Look at what KK Warslut did. Spoke the devils words and never backed down to that judaic online personality who tried to slander him. I never have and never will apologize to a human mollusk for hurting his poor feelings with my art.

NTB: On the topic, how did you manage to coerce Wlad into contributing vocals
to "Still Birth in Bethlehem"? Is the LLN-icon cover design in tribute
to said era, his contribution, or both?

MCS: Wlad is someone whom I've respected a long time, and has been part of what i believe to be the most important circle of black metal. The LLN is long dead, but it's refusal to appeal to anyone but themselves and the dark forces they cultivated has my highest regard. Wlad and i have been in contact for awhile. Recluse has a cover song on the Vlad Tepes compendium. As far as the art goes, the Zlaévatan was used because it is for me the most powerful symbol. I have permission from Vordb of Belketre to use the symbol. It's not a bunch of flashy shit or cartoon goats fucking angels. If anyone doesn't appreciate the stark use of something so powerful it doesn't bother me at all.
