Most people know Loudness and X Japan, but not much else unfortunately as most of the old-school bands never made it big in the West. Japan had no shortage of killer, up-tempo, and catchy as fuck bands in the 80s though.

My buddy wrote a great guide to the scene (I helped edit, format, and add a few sections) for those interested. It lays out the major bands and some other important traditional/speed metal bands. You can find it here:

https://rideintoglory.com/thunder-in-the-east-a-guide-to-japanese-heavy-metal-in-the-80s/

Personal favorite albums of mine from this scene include:
X - Japan - Blue Blood
Loudness - Disillusion, Thunder in the East
Seikima-II - End of the Century
Sabbrabells - S/T
Genocide - Black Sanctuary

Thanks for posting this! I just picked up a still shrink-wrapped copy of Thunder in the East a couple of weeks ago, and was wondering exactly the same thing.

Saw Loudness back on that tour, and they kicked ass. Always appreciated the enthusiasm of Japanese bands.

There's another thread (and a whole forum) dedicated to this subject afaik. Anyway, Vanishing Vision is my favorite Japanese metal record. Lots of hidden gems in the shift from traditional heavy to what would later become the early foundations of visual kei, like Dementia and Rommel.

I like Damzell - War Songs very much. It has a strange athmosphere, ranging from upbeat, fistpumping to bleak, apocalyptic Powerthrash. My favorites are Terrorizer & Fall of Berlin, also Fist & Steel is some of the funniest over the top shit ever!

Brave Bomber are extremely underrated. Great heroic vocals and excellent songwriting on these demos (especially Second Bomb).

United - Destroy Metal EP is classic metal with a slight punky NWOBHM touch (same label as Ghoul & Zadkiel). Unfortunately they turned into goofy skatercore shortly after their debut release & then kept releasing mediocre thrash albums.

There's a forum dedicated to Japanese Heavy Metal and it's a pretty cool spot! I searched for a while and couldn't find an exact thread, figured it's a good topic either way.

Brave Bomber are pretty sweet, pretty much an epic heavy band and I love that stuff

Great list. I especially love Crowley and used to spin that bootleg demo/EP comp constantly.

Really love the Sniper - thrilling shot ep and open the attack lp . Cant get enough of those Saxon/motorhead-ish riffs!

Love this LP.

first Ep and actually all the albums are great. We need a Satanic Metal lp box from Bellzlleb, Tetsu even has his own label so I wonder why this was never re-released.

Good call on Zinc Alloy, I'd add Velle Witch in this kind of obscurities. Also of course Nokemono and Tabbasa are among my favourites eps from there.
