The Sepultura-ish Totem Phase is the only band (and only tangentially old school) I know anything about...anything else to check out?

Something tells me there's not much else and maybe thrash never really caught on in France since Germany had that covered (?).

Edit: also Aggressor is great!

The Aggressor side of this split is THE BEST thing to come out of France.

But they're death metal, no? I haven't heard that album, though.

Not thrash but KILLERS are certainly France's speed metal veterans.

Check out the first No Return album. I prefer their second but that is straight Death Metal. Early Massacra is more Thrash than Death Metal.

Sure. A fantastic recording indeed (this Agressor side is also available as a mini CD released by Black Mark in 1993 under the name "Satan's sodomy", which is also the title of their second demo from 1987 btw).

About other old Thrash bands from France not mentioned yet, you can add MUTILATOR ("Omens of dark fate" demo 1987, some of the most brutal Thrash/Death of the time) SHUD, TORK RAN (both bands having their early works re-released on high-quality Double CDs by Pictavian label Armée De La Mort) or even (more recently) IMPERIAL.

By the way, DEATH POWER's recordings will be re-issued (this year hopefully) by Triumph Ov Death records (who did all the Mutilator / Mutilated / Abyssals vinyl re-issues of the past years).

Try SHUD - the "Rot in Pieces" compilation. Also SCROTUM, which were featured on a great french thrash compilation, but I forgot the name of it...

Any band that has the balls to call themselves Scrotum is ok in my book!
