When I read zines, there is always a big flow of adverts in them, promoting the latest bestial og trve epic records.
But in all honesty, is there any real reason to promote releases/gigs/whatever in zines anymore?
Sure, there are a lot of good looking ads out there, but by the time you read them, the releases have been out for
two months++ already/or you've already been informed by it on the forums you usually use.
I mean; Is there really a demand for these advertisements, or is it just a way of income for magazines?
I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a metalrecord by the help of an ad or flyer in the past 12 years. |

I never charged labels for ad space nor cared if they influenced readers to purchase releases.
From experience, not many labels give a shit about ads in zines anymore. _________________

True. Zines aren't the lifeblood of the underground anymore sadly and labels and even bands don't really need them as such. |

Mainstream mags like Terrorizer need adverts to survive, yet strangely record labels don't really need them anymore. People like us on messageboards do all their advertising and hyping for them now, hahah.
I guess it's more a case of 'we'll pay you for some adverts, so in order to keep your mag from going bankrupt, give us good reviews and interviews or we'll stop advertising'. |

I'm always amazed by HHR especially when I get a package from them, and it's stuffed with a dozen glossy ads - I think they're well done and kind of cool, but I don't really send out too many packages these days and they wind up getting recycled....
I think forums do a lot of the work, but I bet the promotional effect of Decibel/Terrorizer helps labels like Relapse, Earache and Metal Blade move a lot of fucking units to people not as hip or in the know as us.... |

This were actually Normal with any Bigger Zine before Internet, since the Adverts were really Expensive. You can calculat some Thousand €€ for a DinA4 Advert + Interview, so has nothing to do with underground in my opinion. Adverts were queit Useful if you can't get any Information, but in Times with Free Sampler, Free Download, Web Mags, Labels with Freestreams its Money you can Spare. Other if ou want to make a Bigger Label, there you need Adverts today like in the Past but these are morely in the Thousands of Euro Calculation than in some Underground (Web) Zines _________________ Out Now:

That would explain why so many albums are between 7 and 9 out of 10 all the time. ...like literally all the time. |

Yep. Must suck to be a reviewer and to get told by the editor "this one gets at least 8/10" |

I still search and discover zines/CD/tapes etc. from zine reviews or ads. If someone put their effort into making a paper zine/flyer and especially if it catches my eye, it is more likely to influence me than a random internet site or ad. _________________ Great traders/sellers: GoldenBull, Ivan the terrible, OA, LifeDepraved, maranatha, newincident, 61514, Korpinen, NuclearGoatVomit, global deathrape, s. charlach, madcow, xyosefx, goatcaft, Blutkvlt, Ironwood, Unholy Horde, Wolfsturm888, Pinhas |

I've thought of this same issue myself. Some years back when I was trading with people I would put flyers in the package, because I always had a ton of them and extras, now in this internet age it doesn't really seem necessary, and sometimes you even get a flyer of an album you just got in the package, so there's nothing to do with it if you're not a trader. However sometimes getting flyers can be interesting, you can find out about obscure/underground labels online that you had no idea about, for example recently I discovered Skullfucking Records, it's some small label from Canada and they have cheap prices on their items. _________________ "By all evidence we are in the world to do nothing."

I've been writing for various publications for almost 10 years and never once been told this. I've even reviewed bands that have huge features in the magazine and given them a low score. _________________

Advertising in a zine is just a way to buy interviews. So in other words: not relevant. If you need to BUY exposure for your own band, haha. _________________
