Just been thinking this after a few ales and i'd say it's a hard one for me to say. (I think i'll come back to this and put a word in at some-point)

What is your ideal album and why?
What makes it stand out from the rest?

Second wave or bestial with NO "post" elements. Artwork should be organic, it shouldn't be futuristic or mechanical if that makes sense.

For black metal, I second this. Although I'll add -

blisteringly fast and catchy opening track, mid-to-fast temp until the end, and then an epic track to finish.
I like all those "atmospheric" synths and sounds that become fillers, but I like it better when they are kept to a minimum.
8-10 tracks is perfect, 35-50mins. Anything less or more and I feel cheated or exhausted.

GBK and Arghoslent's entire discography in a nutshell.

If I had to create the perfect album for myself:

- Riffs are first and foremost, they need to be powerful and memorable
- Probably some form of death metal, although black metal elements are more than welcome too
- Atmosphere like an ancient lich arising from a crypt (ritualistic, cavernous, evil as fuck)
- Intense emotion through lyrics, vocals, and general song writing (ideal emotion expressed would be intense hatred)
- Right at the sweet spot of 40 minutes long
- Artwork by Putrid Matt, Moyen, or someone else who does drippy black and white stuff...preferably of the aforementioned ancient lich

Things like Burial Invocation and Sperm of Antichrist/Void Meditation Cult have come really close to being damn perfect imo.

The ideal album has drums, guitars, bass, and a vocalist... and boobs on the album cover.

First thing that comes to mind for me is Melissa. I still think that's the finest heavy metal album ever released.

No disagreement on this.

an ideal album is sincere, not over-produced, and enjoyable enough to warrant repeat listens. that's pretty much it.

An ideal album will be powerful and will surprise me in some way. I really can't explain it any better than that, which is frustrating.

Good riffs, decent guitar tone
Well recorded but roughly mixed
30-35 mins
